I heard he will be his legal guardian and its a done deal. He played with the Ville alot longer than he played for Shelby County. The guy from the Ville is loaded and his son is on the same team. It was a done deal last year. Middle school kids are not governed by KHSAA rules, it goes on all of the time. You folks have got to get out to some AAU tournaments and see what goes on, especially at the 14/u level. It's alot worse most places than it is in Kentucky.

Not sure I agree with you, but even if you 50% is true, it's not fair to those who do it right to throw a net over them and say all AAU is no good. Plenty of high school programs aren't run the right way either.

However, go to the AAU nationals and watch the environment around some of the elite teams. It is sad. I think about 30% of the teams at the national level cheat. I have never figured out why, because it deminishes the accomplishment. It is way to easy to doctor a birth certificate and I think it starts at a young age. No one checks the birth certificates so you could get by with anything. They glance at the date of birth and that is about it. Back on the subject, 8th graders are recruited/ shopped as hard as high school juniors. Once you start at a school 9-12 you are bound by the transfer rules of the KHSAA, until then, I know of no one that tracts what happens. Shelby is loaded this year. Nearly all returning starters. And yes Shelby seems to have the team to make some noise. Also playing in the King of Bluegrass. And favorites to win 8th region. The rumor I heard was that Hicks played in some AAU games and no coaches from Shelby attended. And he was upset and possible No Oldham coaches attended and perhaps talked him into the transfer. And he would actually be living with a coach on No Oldhams staff.

 

Shelby IS loaded this year - even without Hicks, who was a sub last year. They are the heavy favorite to win the 8th this year with the entire starting lineup returning as seniors. Mike Clark's squad is one of the most talented team's I've seen at Shelby County

 

Of course, it will be interesting to see how good Shelby is in 2010-11, when all those seniors graduate and the second high school opens... The Rockets and Oldham County - have dominated the 8th Region for three decades.

 

North, however, is no slouch. I cover the 8th Region and have been impressed with North's quick rise. People don't know much about North because the school is only beginning its seventh year of existence. However, in its first six seasons, North has had four winning records... in the last four years, North has won the district twice and advanced to the Region SF twice. Two years ago, they lost in the SF when their star player was lost with a broken hand. Last year, they were considered one of the "big 3" (Anderson, Shelby, and North Oldham) all season, and were one of the top scoring teams in the state. They beat Shelby at Shelby in the regular season - North is 3-3 all-time vs. Shelby County - but lost a lead late vs. Anderson. The Mustangs lost to Anderson in the opening round of the 8th Region tournament.

 

North brings back a rather talented squad this year as well, which may make things very interesting in the 8th, as the Mustangs were probably already Shelby's top challengers, at least in terms of pre-season predictions.

 

Levitch was not a part of the NOHS staff last year, and I hadn't heard that he was going to be an official part of the staff this season, but truthfully, I'm in football mode right now and not following the basketball teams too much.

 

I'm guessing it will be a pretty chilly gym when North and Shelby meet this year...

Unfortunately, very true.

If the kid ends up at North it will confirm what many people think about North's staff. This hurts Shelby with him they are the favorite. Without him this region becomes a 3 team race the same as last year. Say what you want but SC then has 2 players that others team have trouble matching in Beckley and Johnson. The others are average players. I don't see how NO could be the 2nd choice with Anderson returning Russell, Ruggles, the big center, and their point guard. If NO gets Hicks then they become a major player without him they are the 4th best team. With him they have a legit shot at winning the region. Simon Kenton will be much improved this year as well.

Anderson will definitely be solid, and may well repeat, but I think depth will be an issue, and I'm not sure Drury has the defensive players he had last season. Russell's awesome. ...I've also heard rumors that Hicks lives in what would be the Martha Layne Collins HS district (the new Shelby County HS that opens 2010-11). I don't know that this is or isn't true. I suspect this won't be the last transfer over the next year in Shelby County that raises a few eyebrows, although most of those transfers will likely be within Shelby County and will probably be news only to Shelby Countians...that's a frequent issue when new schools open.

Colonel Mike I think Simon Kenton and NO would be close to even without Hicks. Both teams have good pg play. NO is bigger but I know Simon returns a good a wing player. And just for the conversation you posted Shelby's record against NO the past 3 years is 3-2 but I think NO is 0-4 against AC and Shelby is 2-5 against AC the past 3. Thats why I have to keep AC in 2nd right now.
