I wanted to add that the obsession became really crippling for the past year. I was at the point that I could take any and every situation in my life and turn it into a negative or a part of the master plan to do me wrong. I have ran my wife through the mill and I am just blessed that she was able to handle me and still love me through it. I am making up for it now, but I have really caused her alot of agony - and, she didn't even do anything wrong. It was like I was in a fantasyland or something and now that I can think straight, I can't believe some of the stuff I've dreamed up and worried about.

For any of you that don't know, God is a really good friend in your darkest moments. I started going to my church's small group, started trying to actually be a good person and practice what I was preaching (no pun intended). We studied fasting in our small group and I did a week-long fast and actually prayed during the week and stuff. That is when I gained the strength to realize a problem and do something about it.

Wireman, thanks for sharing that. I, too, have been diagnosed with OCD, only mine was more the compulsive side. From my earliest memories, I have been a counter. My mom said she thought I was just clumsy, but oftentimes I would be walking and trip trying to land on even numbers with my steps. If I touched one side of my face, I had to touch the other--odd numbers drove me nuts. I was convinced if I didn't even things out, something bad would happen to someone I love. I kept it pretty much in check until after the birth of my first child. Suddenly, my neatly constructed life spun out of control, at least in my eyes. I had no obvious schedule and I had a hard time dealing with all the uncertainty a new baby brings. My son would nurse on one side and then not want to nurse on the other, and that drove me crazy. I was uneven! No one had any idea how much I was struggling until finally I broke down when he was about 7 months old. My husband was so understanding and helped me so much through such a tough time. He never once looked at me like I was crazy (which I kinda was) and for that I will always be so thankful to him. I got some counseling help and was put on medication, which really pulled me out of the funk (take that, Tom Cruise!) Now, 11 years later I still take Wellbutrin every day and I no longer count in my head. I used to "type" sentences out in my brain while I was speaking, but I don't do that any more either. I don't touch things compulsively, like a hot stove or a knife, just to see if it is hot or if it will cut me. I never realized how bad I was until I was able to control it. And just as a testament to how much better I am, I have FIVE children! Yes, a dreaded, horrible odd number. Hang in there, Wireman. If you follow your professional's advice and not try to do it on your own, you will get better. It takes a while, but no one should have to live in their own private hell--I know, I've been there.

Thanks for sharing your story. I don't think anyone realizes what it's like to struggle behind the scenes that way. I was always able to put on a good "face" to everyone except my own family but that's all it was. I have been studying OCD alot since I was diagnosed and I have came across similar stories as to what you're explaining. There are people that must have things neat, some that must have odd or even numbers, some that must do things in a certain way, etc. Tom Cruise can say whatever he wants, but my medicine has made a complete 180 in my life.

Thanks for sharing Wireman and Threetime it takes a strong person to admit they've had problems.

Wireman and 3Time, thanks.....

Me too. I remember experiencing some of the same things 3TL did when I was a kid, I guess I just grew out of them.

No way. :D

Mine got much worse with the influx of pregnancy hormones and my perceived lack of control. Up until then, I really didn't know I had a problem. I guess I thought everyone did those same things.:idunno: I think what made mine worse was the fact I truly believed if I didn't do my little "quirks" then something bad would happen. I think that is what pushed it over the line into a mental illness.

Came in expecting a funny thread and then it got serious, oh well, good read anyway.

^^

I was expecting the same thing, ah well. From what I've read on Wireman's site-which I go to at least once a week, good stuff Wireman-I can gather that he works pretty hard at his site and it would be pretty tiresome to keep all of that up. That and he has a wife and kid, so I would hope he's so pitiful as to make a fake Twitter account about a high school prospect.

But I will throw out someone, and sorry if this is anyone on here, but I'm a member of this guy's group on Facebook: Cal's Cats, it used to be "Bring John Wall to UK" and he is non-stop sending messages and stuff and he has a website. He seems like the kind of creep that would do this, but not Wireman. Like I said, if anyone on here is the cat that started "Bring John Wall to UK", sorry, but you'e a creep and I wouldn't put it past you to have made a fake John Wall Twitter page.

This is an instant classic.
