Russell has competitive teams every year. Some are better than others. It goes without saying that Russell lost arguable the best player ever to put on a uniform and that being Josh Gross. You cannot replace a player with his talents but you can reload the wing-T. Russell always has excellent running backs every year. Clark will step up to the plate along with the 6 or 8 others looking for a starting job. I see Russell running the regular season schedule with a loss to Boyd County. This will wake them up for the real season and the games that count toward the playoffs. I see Russell playing one of them great mountain teams for a chance to go to the big show. Russell will have the advantage with the game being played at Henry R. Evans stadium this year in front of a large crowd. From there I really don't care who they play in Louisville, :fire: but I do care who wins. No disappointments this year. Russell wins it all. :fire:

They have to make it to the show before they prove anything to me. Fleming County as well.

Russell is without question one of the elite programs year in year out in 2A. True they haven't gotten over the hump but the put a top product on the field every year. I can't remember them ever being down.

They are a young starting team this year I definately agree, but what about their players that have been playing football since they were in oh say the third grade? Everyone seems to forget that at pond creek when one leaves there are always 2 or 3 ready to step up and take their place. For every position they have graduated there are more hungry players ready to step up and make a move. :fire: I think people sometimes forget that !!!!!!! :fight: We are ready for the fight this year! Bring it home again boys!!!!!!

If Middlesboro is the team to beat, then all of mountain football is in trouble.

 

I know they were young last year, but they are still gonna be young this year. Heck, our JV roughed them up pretty good in the 2nd round last year. Before you get too mad, I think Belfry is a year away from serious contention, too.

 

I look forward to the year Belfry, Russell, Prestonsburg, Middlesboro, and Breathitt Co. are hitting on all cylinders in the same year. It may not happen for a while, but boy it would be fun.

Dude... I'm afraid that matchup is impossible.

 

Both teams are in the western semi-state.

Fort Campbell is the prohibitive favorite in the region because most of the other contenders — Owensboro Catholic, Glasgow and Trigg County — had some big talent losses. And with the Falcons able to play at home in the semifinals, assuming they make it there, they have to be the favorite to be in Louisville.

Newport and Lloyd might have some say so in the end!

2A is "Wide-Open" again this year with several teams that can win the title. The team that has the best luck come playoff time wins the title IMO. By luck, I mean other good teams losing and such.

Ask him about the talent, but don't be mad if he hurts your feelings.

Talent isn't everything in high school football.Leslie has talent maybe not as much as the 94 and 95 teams but, you can have a team of superstars on a team and if all they are worried about is getting the ball every play then they won't win many games.

All I was saying is that this year's LC team doesn't have a Tim Couch, a Dan Baker, a Ricky Hensley, a Scott Brock, etc.

 

But you guys don't play in AAA either, so if the stars alignment is right Leslie Co. could make it to the state title. Personally, I doubt it. But my point is that this up and coming club would get wiped out buy the '94 & '95 Leslie Co. club.

 

The main reason being Tim Couch, but thats just my opinion.

I think Mboro will have a better season than many might think looking at them last year. Last year's team was basically a Freshman/Soph dominated team with a strong Senior leader at QB to hold the littleuns together. Big difference this year will be size.

 

When 75% of your starting lineup is 9th & 10th graders, size is an issue - the kids just haven't grown that much yet. This year's squad will look more like a high school team than a middle school team simply because the kids have grown a lot. Yes, they'll still be young - I would guess Miller & Lewis to be the only starting Seniors - but the experience the kids got starting early last year will show.

 

Depth is still an issue, and injuries to key players may yet determine the outcome of the season. Hoskins going to QB leaves at void at WR that must be filled. Some players will change positions, and there will be a learning curve. But the Defense should be outstanding, with, IMO, the best LB Corps in the mountains. Defense Wins Championships, Speed Kills - if these old sayings are true, then Mboro has as good a shot as any Region 4 team.
