Who plays in the 2A state championship game

Featured Replies

I'll be quietly pulilng for the Jugs this season. I know they're not the favorite, but this years team has the best shot in a while. The backfield is solid and I'd stack them up against just about any 2A school in the state. Depth is an issue, but it usually is at the 2A level. Most of these kids have been playing on the varsity level since they were sophmores, and some of them since they were freshman. There experienced, versatile, talented, well coached football players. I think they can do it. Good Luck Juggs. :thumb: :sssh:

I told you to :sssh:...

I would say that is true of the lower divisions, but when we talk about 3A and 4A, I think that more balance is needed. But hey, we are in 2A, and if a team can win by not being good in all areas, so be it. . . . . .

How many passes did St. X and Highlands combined complete during their title game wins?

In high school football, teams that run the ball win the majority of the time.

Actually, in all levels if you have no running game you basically have no shot at winning.

^ Highlands and St. Xavier threw more than you would think.....

Did you get my e-mail

I agree. But if a team can win without being good at every aspect it does not speak well for the strength of Kentucky football IMO.

No, I did not.

I'm not comparing Belfry to Warren Central, IN of two years ago.......but how many times did they throw the ball? They routed everyone they played from what I hear.

I'm just saying that most high school teams are either run dominate or pass happy. They may be 90 pass -10 run or 80 run-20 pass, but the offense is focused to one or the other just the same.

If I reversed what you are saying Zin, it would be like saying Breathitt Co. '02 wasn't any good because all they did was pass the ball. Thats not true by any means, but you never hear anyone say that about strictly passing teams.

Why????? IMO, because it IS more fun to watch, even to me.

I would be lying if I said that I thought the '02 team could win the title, because I knew all they could do was pass the ball, and run with Haddix. They were inconsistant that year, but there was no one to take advantage of that inconsistancy. Russell had the best chance, and should have won that game, but. . . .. . . . . . ..

As I recall, P-burg won the Louisville passing tourny a few years ago, defeating the defending state 4A champ (the team that finished as runner up that year) in the process. That was a pretty good team but I doubt they could have handled the size of a 4A power that year. Passing tourneys are for development and to compete. You can't read anything into them.

Oh yes, my pick. I have a good feeling about my Cats, but I do every year. So, take them out of the equation and I have Fort Campbell over Russell.

Belfry is a PRIME example of that. They rarely show well in passing league games.

Running the football and defending against the run competently still comprises 70-80% of what it takes to win consistantly at the high school level.

True, but Leslie has to get more consideration now after their showing at UK. A lot of people didn't think they would make it past the 1st round.

They sent the best they had to UK, what about the subs during the season? Are they deep as far as talant?

I like LC. I posted elsewhere that Morgan is my pick for the best QB in the mountains. The question is defense and whether the O-line can protect. Morgan is great when he has time to set his feet. I think most of the O-line is back. How much have they developed?

The O-line made leaps and bounds during spring practice. They have mostly worked out their weaknesses and should be very strong. They have also stepped up in the weight room with the projected starters benching as follows:

LT- Jerry Caudill: 365 lbs.

LG- John Horton: 300 lbs.

C- Jared Turner: 265 lbs.

RG- David Smith??: 255 lbs.

RT- still questionable.

They are also very deep at line with at least 3 backups benching over 240 lbs... and they are just sophomores.

Yes, very deep. This is the best team I have seen come along at Leslie in a lot of years. They have more talent than what the '94 and '95 region champs had. They could possibly be better than those teams.

Well i know you guys are not going to give my Newport Wildcats any love. So i am going to say i think they will have a shot at it. They have alot of starters back, and they have a new coaching and new game plan. I think they will have a shot if they step up and play this year. GO NEWPORT!
