The Reds pitching seems to be just getting better at all levels. --Homer Bailey went 8 2/3 shutout innings for Louisville. He allowed six hits, struck out nine and walked two. Over his last three starts, he's gone 23 1/3 innings and allowed one run on 17 hits. He's struck out 23 and walked four. He's 6-5 with a 3.13 ERA overall. --Travis Wood, a left-hander, went seven shutout innings for Carolina. He allowed one hit -- I think he took a no-hitter to the sixth -- walked one and struck out nine. Over his five starts, he's gone 36 innings and allowed two runs on 19 hits. He's struck out 34 and walked four. The Reds also have some good young hitters in AA. CF Chris Heisey, 24, is hitting .364 with 11 HR and 34 RBI's, and 11 SB's. Todd Frazier, 23, is hitting .333 with 4 HR, and 34 RBI's. Taveras is really struggling. The Reds have had hardly any offensive production at 3B, SS, CF all year. What do you do if your Walt? Do you trade Harang, Arroyo, Bailey, Woods or Maloney? Which one would be most valuable in the trade market? Do you bring up Heisey and Frazier and plug them into the lineup, and see what they can do? It's your call. What do you do if your Walt Jocketty?
June 13, 200917 yr Matt Maloney is to the pitching staff what Chris Dickerson is to the outfield. Everyone was ga-ga over Dickerson last year. Their pitching is much better. I think Jocketty's decision depends on three things. Two are the health of Votto and Encanacion. How long are they out? Much better lineup and more power if they both come back. Number three is the market. Who is out there and how much are the Reds willing to overpay? Peavy getting hurt helps the Reds because it takes him off the market for the Cubs, which means they make have to look at other options to improve. The Brewers have proven they will make a big splash if they think that have a shot at winning. The Sabathia deal and Yost firing prove this. THe longer the Reds wait, the more they overpay. Or If they do wait and fall out of contention, they keep their young pitching intact and try to rebuild through FA in the offseason. This was around the time last year when the Brewers got Sabathia and the Cubs got Hardin. They finished 1-2 in the division. It all comes down to who is out there.
June 15, 200917 yr Reds are 3-7 in their last 10 games. The good news is so are the Brewers & Cards. The real question is what bats are available? I do not want to overpay for a rest-of-the-year rental. This team has an outside shot of winning this year, but the future is much brighter. I wouldn't mind seeing Heisy get a shot. There are quite a few big league clubs who bring a lot of players up from AA. The Reds don't seem to like doing that, but times are tough.

That's what I was leaning towards, but I think they can make a run this year with their pitching. If Edwin & Votto can both return & produce, I think this team will be able to compete. I'm not sure that a trade would help us out enough this year to win anymore than we're already capable of. And I think it'd cost too much.

June 15, 200917 yr If someone is interested in Harang I'd do it in a heart beat. The key to me is the health of Volquez and Votto. If either are out significant amounts of time sit back and hope to make a run next year. The only problem w/ doing that is they have the pitching to contend this year. You never know if that will be the case again.

June 15, 200917 yr Arroyo won't land the impact hitter that the Reds need. Harang would, but that's also taking a risk in the rotation. Frazier has been moved off shortstop to the infield corners and the outfield, so his value is probably down a bit. Heisey turns 25 in December, so his value and window might be limited, too. Scribe is right ... a return to the lineup by a healthy Votto and Encarnacion would be a great help and could buy the Reds a little more time to make a decision to go for it or not.

I know a lot of teams around the league who wouldn't mind giving up a solid bat, and a prospect for Arroyo, Homer, and Dickerson. A team that comes to mind, the Baltimore Orioles. What about Luke Scott? .314, 14 homers, 36 RBI.
