Wireman Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 Andy Katz is reporting that Kentucky coach John Calipari has already spoken to three players that will not return to Kentucky next season. Katz describes them as: But Kentucky officials had previously acknowledged that under former coach Billy Gillispie one reserve knew that he was on a one-year scholarship, another had already graduated but had a year of eligibility remaining while a third was apparently not talented enough for the SEC. There could be more attrition to come, according to Calipari. The Wildcats will need to come up with one more scholarship if Jodie Meeks withdraws from the NBA draft by June 15. The roster will take shape at the latest by mid-June after Meeks makes his decision whether he's staying in the draft or returning for his senior season in Lexington. The article also announces that Calipari is hoping to attract as many NBA players as possible to Lexington during the summer for workouts. He hopes to get guys like Nazr Mohammed, Tayshaun Prince, Rajon Rondo and Chuck Hayes to come back and play this summer. "I want as many guys playing here as possible," Calipari said. Katz also mentions that Darius Miller will be trying out for the United States Under-19 team that will be coached by Pitt's Jamie Dixon. Here is Katz's Article
MJAlltheWay24 Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was able to get Nazr Mohammed back after reading the things he posts on Twitter.
Wireman Posted May 22, 2009 Author Posted May 22, 2009 I guess the 3 players he mentions would be: Donald Williams, Jared Carter and who? Harrellson?
dolamite Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I guess the 3 players he mentions would be: Donald Williams, Jared Carter and who? Harrellson? I took at as Williams and Porter, with the third being either Harrelson or Pilgrim. I would think MP would get the nod based on brute strength alone. Guy is a beast in the weightroom and could be used as an enforcer if things get ugly.
NineOh Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I don't think that's referring to Carter because he's graduated.
CoachBuckett Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 This is the discussion I have been waiting for. The NCAA has to start protecting kids that are on scholarship. When a kids transfers he gets punished and has to lose a year of playing time. Coaches are allowed to change Universities like changing underwear and all I hear is kids play for a school not a coach. Well here are 3 kids that "Picked a University to play for" that are now getting punished for picking to the wrong school. Neither the school or the NCAA will due right by these kids. So once again the kids are getting the raw end of the deal. Now I understand Coach Cal wants his own kids or kids that fit into his system. But shouldn't he have to do that after these other kids graduate? Now many on here will attack me because they can't see throught Blue Shaded glasses. But the question I want to ask is, Is this fair to teenage kids who chose your school over others?
tenaciousD Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I understand what you are saying. But if he HAS to wait to get his players in until after he graduates... he's at the wrong university. I have been a big blue fan all of my life, and we have the most fickle fans on the planet. You better believe that if he's not having success after 2 years the fans will be calling for his head. He is making these decisions based on his own job security, and every coach in the country does it.
nkysportslegend Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 The kid's scholarships are based on a year to year basis. Just as a kid who receives an academic scholarship is held accountable for not performing well in the classroom these kids are held accountable for their productivity on the court. Right or wrong that is the way it is.

mobaar Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 But what if you dont get a chance? They get a chance every day in practice.

Just as a kid who receives an academic scholarship is held accountable for not performing well in the classroom these kids are held accountable for their productivity on the court. Right or wrong that is the way it is. Absolutely. I had pretty much a full-ride to UK but it was contingent on my production in the classroom. If I fell behind, then I would have lost it. There were no guarantees.

Right or wrong that is the way it is. I don't have a probelm with them being held accountable. I have more of a problem with these kids not be able to transfer and play right away. I think every kid should be able to transfer every year if they so choose. So are you saying kids are not property of the school but property of the coach? Meaning they come to play for a certain coach and not the school.
woodsrider Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I guess the 3 players he mentions would be: Donald Williams, Jared Carter and who? Harrellson? Williams, Porter, and ? Carter can't come back next year.
