9th Region POY

Featured Replies

Lets see, proir to Maile winining the POY in his 10th and 11th grade years, it was Farris winning his in his 10th grade year (I believe), so the ninth has not had a POY winner that was a senior for what three or four years now!

Sort a puts to rest your statement!

Who ever talked about a senior or junior winning it?:lol::lol:

While I understand your argument you may want to look at the other side before making up your mind. While CCH players see better teams Bellevue has gotten to the point where the teams they play use their best pitcher against them. The players on CCH also have team mates behind them who are very good hitters as where Hunter has some very quality players on his team (Alex Hegge who hits after him and others) but not the depth that CCH has though out the line up. This allows teams to pitch around Hunter who at times gets frustrated and will chase a bad pitch. This out of desire to contribute to his teams efforts. So while CCH players may see more top caliber teams they also see more quality pitches to hit as well. None of the kids mentioned would be a bad choice for POY just gets down to what player of year really is. Is it the player who means most to his team or is it the most talented player. Some like to judge it by team he is on and their record.

You actually picked the wrong player to throw out the "pitch around" argument. Maile would be the one who has a grip when it comes to that practice, and for multiple years. I think Hunter is a solid ballplayer but just does not play the same caliber of schedule that CovCath plays, not his fault just reality. To me Darner is the POY this year to this point, but there still is some season left.

One of the CCH players will win POY. Hunter Jones i would say is the most valuable player. Where would Bellevue be without him?

Absolutely no one is pitched around more than Maile

Absolutely no one is pitched around more than Maile

Why is there even any discussion about this? If I remember correctly, I believe that the Northern Kentucky Enquirer had Maile picked as POY long before any pitch was thrown or bat was swung.

Maybe because Darner is having a better season as of now? And maybe some people have their opinions about other good players in the running. :idunno:

I think that you have mistaken where I was going with this. I think that it was a travesty that the Enquirer made any mention that early who "they" thought the player of the year should be. I am not saying that Maile doesn't deserve it again, maybe he does, but let us look at all the other wonderful talent in this area and then make a truly educated and unbiased decision.

That is a "Pre-season" POY pick and not the actual one. Ryan Darner (aka RD) at this point, IMO, is the 9th Region POY...

What is your criteria for POY? Would like to here different opinions.

1. batting average

2. fielding percentage

3. base running ability

4. over all talent

5. value to team

Just a few for thought.

I would also throw in Steve Rickles and Andy Roenker from Holy Cross.

Great Players, Steve isn't quite up to par with the other hitters mentioned, and Andy wouldn't beat out Isler if a pitcher were to get it.

RBI's and OBP are much more important than base running ability, or batting average! You can have outstanding speed but if you don't get on....what good is the speed. Fielding percentage is way down on my list because he can be a DH. No guy with a great, outstanding or wonderful glove is ever going to win a POY if he can't hit, but a guy who can hit can have a bad/poor glove can win the POY.

While I was just putting out food for thought I do agree about RBI's and OBP. However I don't think a POY can have a bad/poor glove. It's not the batter of the year it the player of the year which would insinuate all around player. Which Maile has been the last two years.

So a kid who hits 0.575 has a OBP of 0.675 and a slugging average of 1.014 has 10 HR 75 rbi's and 45 runs scored but only DH's can't win the award? Just kidding a good glove is important....

Speaking of Maile, at Boyd County an elderly gentlemen (I guess a Boyd County fan) came up to Luke after the Franklin County game and told him he was the best HS catcher he had every seen play the game, and he told Luke he has seen plenty of great HS players and had seen plenty of HS games. I could tell Luke was genuinely touched by the gentlemen complement, as Luke shook his hand and thank him for the kind words. It was a nice moment and a great way to end the day, after a great win.

Stories like that and kids like Luke are what make this game of high school baseball so great.
