I can agree with that. He isn't a good tactician or game manager but he does get his players to play hard and generally stays out of their way. He's not nearly the worst in the league--but certainly not one of the best.

That is true. But he is a lot like Gillispie in this way:

 

His teams tend to dig deep holes early, and have to fight there way back out.

You do understand this is the NBA, correct? Coaches without supreme talent don't win, ever. Name me the last NBA champion that didn't have supreme talent?

I think being able to convince Allen, Pierce, and Garnett to buy into a system that they aren't used to has to count for at least something.

Maybe Larry Brown with the Pistons? He didn't have supreme dominant talent.

I think Doc Rivers may possibly be the worst NBA Coach in the game today.

 

In ten seasons as a head coach, Rivers has finished no higher than 8 games above .500 (outside of the past two).

 

He is 273-312 as a head coach (taking away the last two seasons).

 

Without having Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Rajon Rondo, he has done absolutely nothing.

 

He has missed the playoffs four times as a head coach, and even with the championship last season, he is a combined 24-24 in the playoffs. Even with last seasons all-star team, he lost ten playoff games. He had only won 8 playoff games in the last nine seasons before winning 16 last year.

 

Quite honestly, you give someone else this talent (Vinny from Chicago, or a multitude of college coaches) and these have no problem winning.

Rodgers is certainly not the worst NBA coach. He's also certainly not the best. I'm not sure what qualifies us to determine who can and can't coach at this level though. Personally, I've never won an NBA game.

True, there are more bad coaches than just Doc. But he did absolutely nothing until he had Garnett, Pierce, and Allen. Look at someone like Don Nelson, who has done miraculous things at Golden State.

They did have one superstar in Rick Barry (30.6 ppg). Rookie Jamaal Wilkes averaged 14 ppg. Other double figure scorers were Butch Beard and Charles Johnson.

Key role players were Clifford Ray, Jeff Mullins, Derrick Dickey, and Phil Smith. They swept the heavily favored Washington Bullets in the finals. The Bullets had Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Mike Riordan, and Kevin Porter.

 

I remember there was talk of the Warriors playing the ABA champion Kentucky Colonels in a best of 7 for the "World Championship" but it failed to materialize.

 

Also, it wasn't Channel 9's decision to delay the games. Pretty sure it was the CBS network did it nationnally. I was almost 16, so I was able stay up and watch the games. I couldn't do that now on a bet! :lol:

I removed his best because the point was, without Allen, Garnett, and Pierce he has done nothing whatsoever.

 

Even with just Pierce, he could only manage 24 wins, and lost 18 straight games.

Most NBA coaches are overrated. They just have to manage the ego's on the team and that is about it. For every Jerry Sloan and Greg Popavich, you have ten Scott Skiles. Take Phil Jackson for example, he will go down as one of the all-time greats, but what does he really do? Sit there while his talented teams win games for him. If you have a team led by Jordan and Pippen, or Kobe and Shaq, or even now with Kobe and company, just about any living breathing person could excel.
