May 5, 200917 yr I think Doc Rivers may possibly be the worst NBA Coach in the game today. In ten seasons as a head coach, Rivers has finished no higher than 8 games above .500 (outside of the past two). He is 273-312 as a head coach (taking away the last two seasons). Without having Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Rajon Rondo, he has done absolutely nothing. He has missed the playoffs four times as a head coach, and even with the championship last season, he is a combined 24-24 in the playoffs. Even with last seasons all-star team, he lost ten playoff games. He had only won 8 playoff games in the last nine seasons before winning 16 last year. Quite honestly, you give someone else this talent (Vinny from Chicago, or a multitude of college coaches) and these have no problem winning. Who else is considered as bad or worse than Rivers?
May 5, 200917 yr Vinny was not good in that last series. He ran out of TO's in the first two games. He had the more athletic and deeper team and he got beat out by experience. That happens but a lot of other coaches would have won that series. I agree that Doc isn't great and he would have been canned after last year if not for Minnesota dumping Garnett on him and Seattle getting younger, but he pushed all of the right buttons last year.
May 5, 200917 yr Author The coach who won the title last year is one of the worst coaches? Hmmm. I could win a title with the talent they had even as a mute. They let the Hawks take them to seven games.

This is the first ever head coaching job for Vinny, and he took the #2 seed and defending champions to seven games with a talented, but extremely young team.

True, but the Celtics didn't have Kevin Garnett. They aren't the same team without him, especially defensively. And Mike Dunleavy is a much worse coach.

It was his first experience and he will learn from it but he was still bad. Doc isn't great either, but for the most part the team w/ the most talent wins the title. Last year the Celtics were big underdogs in the finals and they won the title. That can't be disputed. As good as Phil Jackson is he had Jordan for 6 titles and Kobe and Shaq for 3. He's a great coach IMO but he has lost in the finals twice w/ a team that was favored to win the series. Doc didn't have that kind of talent before last year. The time he had enough talent to win a title he did.

May 5, 200917 yr I don't think Doc is a great game coach but he is 401-348 in his career. He's coached 9 full seasons in the NBA and has finished below .500 only twice. Like I said I wouldn't call him great but he's not the worst. His players have always seemed to play hard for him which has led to much of his success but he's not a good strategist.

I think I can just get out of the way and let you stay on top of this one b/c I'm w/ you again here. Great? No. Terrible? No.
May 5, 200917 yr Mike Dunleavy is 592-688 .463 with 9 losing seasons in 15 full seasons coaching. He's 42-122 the past 2 seasons. He has 1 first place finish in his career and that came in a season in which he wasn't the coach for the full season.
May 5, 200917 yr Author True, there are more bad coaches than just Doc. But he did absolutely nothing until he had Garnett, Pierce, and Allen. Look at someone like Don Nelson, who has done miraculous things at Golden State. Flip Saunders is one of the best in-season coaches. When it comes to the playoffs, he is questionable, but he is a winner when it doesn't count. Outside of his championship last year, Rivers has lost in the first round the four other times he made the playoffs. He has finished below .500 twice, but outside of this two year run, his highest finish was .549. He had never won more than 45 games in a year, and his very best year was 8 games above .500 that ended in another first round loss. I'll agree, Dunleavy may be worse, but with the talent that Rivers has had the past two seasons, Dunleavy would have likely done better. But that is all speculation.
