Pat Forde on Karen Sypher-Pitino story

Featured Replies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Judy Cunigan sits in the darkened living room of her modest house in Louisville's South End. The blinds are drawn on this spring afternoon. The doors are dead-bolted.

She is fearful. And she is furious.

"I want to kill him," she says, "for what he's done to my family."

The object of her rage is arguably the most popular and powerful man in town: Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino.

What Cunigan alleges Pitino has done to her family dates back more than five years, when her daughter, then Karen Cunigan and now Karen Sypher, first met the coach. The family has never filed any criminal complaints or civil claims against Pitino, and to date, their allegations remain so unsubstantiated that they cannot even be reported responsibly. As one source close to the situation put it, "There are severe credibility problems here."

"[Clay] has not helped me," Karen Sypher said earlier in the day by phone. "He tells me to keep my mouth shut and he'll keep me out of prison."

She talks, and she cries, more than once. She says she hasn't slept well, doesn't eat well and has relied on counseling to get her through recent weeks. She is terrified of what will happen to her children if she is sent to jail.

"My life's over," she says at one point.

If she didn't try to extort money, or knows nothing about the threatening calls made to Pitino, why is she worried about going to jail?

"Rick is a powerful man," Judy Cunigan said. "And I don't think you can beat a powerful man."

More powerful than the FBI? Really?

Two really good questions. She obviously thought she had some kind of info that he wouldn't want made public. I just wonder what she thought she had on him that was worth money?

Again, let me reiterate. I'm not saying Sypher tried to extort Pitino. I'm not saying Pitino is innocent of an affair. Those questions I just posted are why I have my doubts about Sypher's side of the story.

Sounds like a death threat from Mrs. Sypher's mother. Maybe they can share a cell.

There has to be more to this story than just an affair. Otherwise, Sypher would be the dumbest woman in history if she tried to get money to keep quiet. It's commonly known that Rick has had multiple affairs over the years... that wouldn't be anything to shock people. Of course, having one with the wife of someone on your staff would be a different spin. I think she sounds like an unstable person, but also a person with a story to be told. Again, movie of the week here.

When I read what she had said ...I thought the same thing.

I too agree that there is more to the story than just an affair. With Richard leaving town, he made be connected.

Not saying you're wrong, but I think if Richard were involved in some way, the FBI would have made him come back, or gone to him...

I'm going to ramble a minute:

Why, if whatever happened, happened so long ago did she wait till now to "seek the truth"?

Is it because now, she's about to be divorced with 5 kids to support?

What mother would even think of putting their kids through this kind of a mess?

I don't even have a clue as to what this is all about. But, whatever it's about, whether she's justified in her anger, whether she's truly somehow been wronged, she has COMPLETELY gone about this the wrong way. Whatever comes of this, she is irrecovably tied to this story until she passes away.

If something criminal occurred, the the FBI will ferret it out. I simply can't figure out what would be so big that it would warrant an extortion attempt. I also can't figure out why she would not have attempted such an insane thing right after whatever happened, happened.

Her timing is just weird, and suspect.

She needs money now, that's why it's coming out. If Pitino did something wrong, then why did he call the FBI, that's the question I keep wondering.

She uses some very strong language for a woman being investigated by the FBI.:eyeonyou:

Kinda my thoughts too... If he had done something illegal, he wouldn't call the FBI.

Exactly, and I'm not saying he didn't do anything. I don't know. If he did it was obviously something personal. Even the WDRB reporter said the allegations were personal in nature.

The article wasn't very revealing, I guess TJ has them on lockdown too...

Karen Sypher said tearfully Tuesday afternoon that her name has been dragged through the mud, and wondered how she would ever get another job. Yet she agreed to meet with an ESPN.com reporter despite the urging of her attorney, Thomas Clay, to keep quiet.

In fact, Karen Sypher told ESPN.com that Clay quit as her attorney Tuesday because his client would not stop publicly airing her grievances against Pitino, and, to a lesser extent, grievances against her own husband. Clay said Wednesday that he does still represent Karen Sypher, at least as of the time of the phone call.

Hmmm...when your attorney quits because you won't shut up that says something about the individual in question.
