kywldcat01 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 The thread about the best teams in the state of this decade got me to thinking. Which 9th region school has had the best program during the 2000's? As it stands, the two most winningest schools since 99/00 are: Holmes 220-90 Covcath 212-83 Number of wins aren't always a true testament as to how good a program/team really is/was though. Thoughts?
Clyde Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Holmes success the last 2 years would make this a short debate.
Tiger1 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Holmes success the last 2 years would make this a short debate. What Holmes has done in the last three yrs has never been done by any 9th region team in history...make it to Saturday in the state tournament three straight yrs and play in back to back state championship games and win a state championship. So, as Clyde said, this should end this debate quickly.
Baseballguy Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Holmes success the last 2 years would make this a short debate. :thumb: No debate.
Grizzly33 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Disagree with the short debate argument. Maybe I would change my tune if Holmes threepeats final four appearance. I think you have to throw in CovCath as an option. I'd probably still lean to Holmes but before 2005 it was all CovCath IMO. Highlands number 3, Boone number 4, NCC number 5.
tash2597 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I agree wins and losses don't tell the whole story. For instance, in 05-06 Holmes had 7-8 games that Rice and Jefferson didn't play in due to grades, behavior,etc..Than after a big win at Highlands Rice gets kicked off the team [rightfully so]. Than the start of the 06-07 season Nate leaves the school , Holmes players get susp. for the Lex. Cath. thing. 5 of Holmes top 7 are susp. the only ones who wasn't involved Arrez and Austin. IMO if Duran doesn't get hurt at Boone Co. in a football game, and Nate stays at Holmes they win state. Nate could flat out shoot the rock and strecth the D. With all that said Holmes and Cov. Cath. has sure provided us with some great 35th and 9th Region Championships. I'm sorry to rant, but it still befuddles me how Rice, Hill, Jefferson, and Edmondson couldn't get along.
kywldcat01 Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Let's look at the numbers this decade: State Tournament Wins: Holmes 9 Covcath 2 Region Championships: Holmes- 4 (05, 07, 08, 09) Covcath- 2 (04, 06) Highlands-1 (01) Newcath- 1 (00) Ryle-1 (02) St. Henry- 1 (03) Region Final Appearances: Holmes- 5 (00, 05, 07, 08, 09) Covcath- 5 (02, 04, 06, 07, 08) Newcath- 2 (00, 06) Boone Co- 2 (04, 09) Conner- 2 (01, 05) Highlands- 1 (00) St. Henry- 1 (03) District Championships: Dixie- 8 (01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08) Covcath- 6 (01, 02, 04, 05, 06, 07) Newcath- 5 (00, 01, 04, 07, 09) Highlands- 5 (02, 03, 05, 06, 08) Holmes- 4 (00, 03, 08, 09) St. Henry- 4 (03, 07, 08, 09) Boone Co- 2 (04, 09) Conner- 2 (05, 06) Ryle- 1 (02)
NHS BIG DADDY Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Holmes last 3 seasons makes it hard for any team to say they have been better in the 2000's. Last 3 years: 95-15, 1 final four appearance, 1 state runner up, and 1 State Championship.
Flotsam Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I would have to go with Holmes. Cov Cath finishes a strong second.

Am I reading this wrong, because Holmes has made it to 3 straight final four appearances and 2 straight state championship games with them winning one of them. There is no other option...Holmes is by far the best team of the decade.

The CovCath team that lost to Warren Central in 2006ish would give this Holmes team a fight.

LOL

I think you're referring to the 04 team that won region with Nestheide, Kennedy, Votel Brothers, Erpenbeck, Wachs, and Muck. That team was very good here in the 9th.

That team was very good here in the 9th. I think one of the best teams in this decade that not many people talk about is the St. Henry team in 2003 I think it was. That was a great team, and I really think they had a very good shot at winning the whole thing if one of their best players didn't get hurt in the first game of the tournament. They had size, speed and all them seemed like they could shoot from the outside.
