I think one of the best teams in this decade that not many people talk about is the St. Henry team in 2003 I think it was. That was a great team, and I really think they had a very good shot at winning the whole thing if one of their best players didn't get hurt in the first game of the tournament. They had size, speed and all them seemed like they could shoot from the outside.

 

I agree. If not for Schmidt going down with an injury early, I really think St. Henry could have done some damage that year. They were led by Schmidt, Veith, Otte, Fabiani, Czarnik, and Lageman. A very balanced and unselfish group. Simon Kenton lost 5 games to nky teams that year and 3 of those 5 came to St. Henry. SK was no slouch either with Brock, Reed, Kannady and role players Schoborg, Jordan & Joe Nevels, and Ev. Stowers.

I think you're referring to the 04 team that won region with Nestheide, Kennedy, Votel Brothers, Erpenbeck, Wachs, and Muck. That team was very good here in the 9th.

I agree wins and losses don't tell the whole story. For instance, in 05-06 Holmes had 7-8 games that Rice and Jefferson didn't play in due to grades, behavior,etc..Than after a big win at Highlands Rice gets kicked off the team [rightfully so]. Than the start of the 06-07 season Nate leaves the school , Holmes players get susp. for the Lex. Cath. thing. 5 of Holmes top 7 are susp. the only ones who wasn't involved Arrez and Austin. IMO if Duran doesn't get hurt at Boone Co. in a football game, and Nate stays at Holmes they win state. Nate could flat out shoot the rock and strecth the D. With all that said Holmes and Cov. Cath. has sure provided us with some great 35th and 9th Region Championships. I'm sorry to rant, but it still befuddles me how Rice, Hill, Jefferson, and Edmondson couldn't get along.

 

 

You really can't play "What ifs?" in these types of discussions because I am sure many of the schools could give you several of them to help their cause. You gotta go with what happened.

Correct. The past two years Holmes has nearly ran the table in the 9th but suffered late season losses and this year Boone got tripped up early in the year before winning out until the region championship and finishing with 2 losses.

Holmes success the last 2 years would make this a short debate.

If you're talking about the Program of the 2000's, then there's no doubt that Holmes is on top. If for nothing else, then this past year. They're the only school with a state title. And to add on top of that, they've played on that last Saturday the past 3 seasons.

 

If you're talking about the best team of the 2000's, then the argument could re-open for debate.

The thread about the best teams in the state of this decade got me to thinking. Which 9th region school has had the best program during the 2000's?

 

As it stands, the two most winningest schools since 99/00 are:

 

Holmes 220-90

Covcath 212-83

 

Number of wins aren't always a true testament as to how good a program/team really is/was though.

I don't have to play the what if card, due to the fact the team I'm speaking of won 4 out of 5 9th region championship and a state title. I was responding to an earlier post that said wins and losses don't tell the whole story. I agree with that post and I gave the reason I agreed. I don't feel the need to boost Holmes numbers. Everybody was pretty much in agreement that Holmes was the best team. So I was speaking on how that class could have and should have accomplished more.

Pretty sure it was the worst in Covcath history...or atleast under Listerman.

Holmes 9 State Tournament wins, 4 Regional Championships, 8 District Championships, and now a State Championship, and likely a very long run next season. End of story.
