Sleep Study

Featured Replies

I'm having a Sleep Study tonite. Lung Doctor has ordered this, anyone ever done one? Why lung doctor I asked? UK plays at 7 and I get there at 7:45, I can't sleep with the game on....Trying to be funny. Bring things I sleep with, Mama stays away. I don't sleep well and Mama tells me I snore some but not every nite. My Train Engineer job was a real hard job on getting proper rest. Many nites I'd just lay down to go to sleep and my phone will ring to go to work, so I still don't get enough sleep.

Can't take my nap today, I do nap about every day for about 20 minutes which helps. I use old preaching tapes to help me get there and I'll take one tonite, I also have severe Ringing in the ears/head. Railroad noise for 33 years. And the tapes help drown out the ringing. ZZZZZZZ

I've had two sleep studies done and surgery to straighten my septum and and also to open up my throat because of sleep apnea.

The big concern with these studies is the blood oxygen level while you are sleeping. If you snore chances are you stop breathing several times throughout the course of the night. Which causes your B/O level to drop. Studies have shown that low B/O levels lead to many health risk factors down the road, particularly coronary and stroke concerns.

Not everybody who snores has apnea. I still snore but 5 years after having my surgeries. I stop breathing 1/10th the amount of times I did before, and my B/O level is well above normal.

Yeah, I've done one. Didn't like it. It's just kind of weird - they're studying your sleep pattern and tendencies, but you're not in your own bed, not allowed to partake in your usual pre-bed activities (whatever they are), have wires hooked up to you, etc. Besides having had insomnia for many years, I just don't even sleep well in a different environment than my home. I was disgnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome and second insomnia (I fall asleep okay, but having trouble staying asleep through the night). In fact, I haven't slept completely through the night in at least 25 years.

I have had one and they are not fun because you have electrods all over your face and chest as well as a band around your chest and a TV monitor watching you. If you can't go to sleep you can request a sleep aid in pill form. Also you can watch TV in your room until your normal bed time.

When I had mine done I had a TV and could watch anything I wanted to watch. I had a hard time going to sleep just because the tech's oredred pizza and I could smell it through the cracks of my door and they were talking and laughing all night.:isurrender:

Little TD aka "Jonathan" had this test. He ended up not having sleep apnea but found other medical condition. He has leak in the mitral valve. We now just watch that by regular visits to his cardiologist.

The test is annoying!

I have apnea, had the test, use the C-Pap every night. It will change your life. The study is mildly annoying because you are connected to a million wires that you "crunch" around on all night.

I had one done and it was rather wierd trying to sleep with all the wires and knowing that someone is watching on video. I finally had to take a sleeping pill because I couldn't go to sleep.

FWIW I did have apnea then and used a c-pap. Since I've lost weight I no longer have the apnea.

That gives me hope All Tell.

Had one done last fall. I had apnea. About 55 times an hour I stopped breathing. (at least that's what they said)

I hope losing weight will get me off the machine eventually but I do sleep better most nights. However there are some mornings I wake up at 3 or so and find I've taken my mask off and it's sitting neatly by the stand and the machine is turned off.

Either I've done that and don't remember or my wife is trying to kill me!! :scared:

I slept much better with the c-pap then without it but for about a month after getting it I took it off in the middle of the night.

This sums it up well. Although they do look for other issues during the study. I've gone through two or three of these studies. It's a good thing you are having it done, because sleep apnea will kill you.

Sleep apnea was a big part of my condition back in the late 90's. I went into heart, lung and kidney failure, ended up on dialysis, and was very nearly declared dead a few times. It took 285 hospital nights, 19 admissions, several long stays on life support and a tracheostomy to straighten things out. So take a lesson from my four and a half year nightmare. If you're snoring or having trouble sleeping, get tested right away. It's relatively simple, and it could save your life. :thumb:

Thanks everyone, Mama and I just read everyone's post. I just hope I don't shout Alyassa Milano's name. Fixin to go to it.

My husband had the study twice and now uses a c-pap and it is great for me no more snoring and he SLEEPS much better and is rested in the morning.

 That made me laugh out loud! I think I'm going to look into having this test done. I've broken my nose about 3 or 4 times, stiches etc. I am always tired. I got my nose checked out about 3 years ago and had 98% blockage in one side. That was with a deviated septum too. I had the surgery done to straighten it out and they fixed the septum plus shrunk my sinuses (which was great for about 3 months). Unfortunatly my nose went back to where it was. It's frustrating because now I feel like I have 100% air blockage in one side. My wife says I quit breathing at night sometimes. I'm always worn out it seems. I blame it on two little one's and hard work but I really think this has a lot to do with it. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD to nose surgery again but I'm thinking about taking the plunge if they think it will work for good.

Anybody know any good sleep labs + or nose Dr's in Eastern KY? I had my last surgery at Central Baptist in Lex and it didn't work.

Bellefonte Hospital in Russell has a quality sleep lab. Heard good things about it.

Let's not forget that sleep apnea killed the greatest pass rusher in NFL history if I'm not mistaken. (Reggie)
