State tourney attendance

Featured Replies

I just don't buy it. 10 years ago, their were packed houses at all the basketball games in my area, now, not so much. And, don't throw the economy thing out there, this has been going on in my area for quite some time.

I have also read a lot of threads on here where people have been upset with attendance at their regular season games. I don't think that I am imagining that this has not always been an issue.

Maybe it's a regional thing. I don't know

I have to agree here with you. Especially for most schools in the 16th, with a few exceptions. I remember during the 90's at West Carter when the gym was full almost every game. Which we had some nice teams and players coming through there so that helped. But, overall in NEKY, I think BBall attendance is down. :idunno:

I think Football has become king in KY for MOST schools. If for no other reason it is the thing to do on friday nights in the fall. The Basketball state tournament is the king of HS sports in KY and that wont change unless they divided up classes or separated public from private. Once again, this is just my opinion.

The enforcement of Title IX rules has got to have some affect on attendance. Boys programs are forced to play on non-marquee nights and times. more these days.

Boys are not forced to play on any night. Girls on the other hand have to play 40% of all home games on a prime time night. This is kinda a reverse of what Title IX was meant for. Now Boys can play when ever and girls have to play according to these guidelines. This doesn't help anyone. This rule has to be revisited soon.:idunno:

I have to agree with you on all accounts. In our area, football has a lot better attendance, unless, like you said, a team has a really good year going. But, the Sweet 16 definitely has better attendance then the Football Finals.

The Commissioner or someone on the broadcast said the finals attendance was about 15k or 16k.

It was announced at the game being over 18k at the finals on Sat. nite. Also said it was the most attended tournament since 91 or 92.

I think one difference in the good attendance in the 1970's and 1980's from the poor attendance today is that we now have ESPN and other sports channels and there's games everywhere on TV to watch. Years ago this was not the case. In our area we only received 3 channels. Not so anymore. People are choosing to stay home and watch college and NBA games, and I suppose save their money.

The real reason for attendance issues, has nothing to do with Title IX, football or anything else. We simply in our state, play too many games. Period. Our schools play a maximum of 29 games, versus 10 specific Friday dates in football. That's why the support is watered down and spread out, and then is only concentrated into one venue at state tournament. It has nothing to do with classes, public private, football or anything else, but is simply dilution. We play more games than 80% of the states in the country and then complain about the consequences. If we played less nights, those nights would be more focused, there wouldn't be Title IX date worries, and probably, single game attendance would increase.

Agreed, 100%. I think Indiana plays an 18-game regular season schedule and two allowed tournaments (which bumps up to around 21-24 games). That would be more than perfect.

Indiana's teams, as I understand it, are limited to 20 games. There are some exemptions, for teams in the bigger tournaments.

Less games? Are you kidding me? Kids want to play games. It would be wrong to take games away from the kids.

Yep. Why take 6-8 games away. Most schools only get another 20-60 in during the summer.

It is also important to note, however, that Indiana has four rounds of playoff basketball (section, region, semi-state, state), while Kentucky only has three (district, region, state)

Why would it be wrong? If you can't afford to turn the lights on and pay officials, then you have no games anyway. If you reduced the total number of games by 4 (2 home, 2 road), then you might be able to draw a slightly larger crowd. Wasn't that the whole point of the thread to begin with?

No way.

You limit games you have to do away with 1 class, which would kill it even farther.

Districts that seed are locked into 6-10 games so you could only schedule 8-12 games........no way.

The reason IMHO is not set days to play. In 94' and 95' we played on Tuesdays and Fridays almost every week aside from the occasional Saturday game and tourney. 94' we wasn't very good but it was still packed out. 95' we were real good and packed. 96' they started enforcing the Title IX stuff and we were real good(R/U in WYMT, undefeated at home, district champs, beat some really good Lex. and Louisville teams) and we did not have good attendance.

In my area there are 2 many games. I can think of several occations this year when a boys team would have a game and girls team would play same nt different place and middle school team would also play someplace. Then you throw in elementary games and its a possibility of haveing 4 teams from 1 school playing on same nt in 4 different places. I know this happens in several schools.
