doomer Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I propose that Kentucky add the top 8 non-region winners to the tournament. They can be selected by coaches, a committe, or a ranking, etc (not the press!). This could add a day or morning to the event, but would generate revenue, even more interest and be more FAIR. It is time for a change!
Wireman Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 This would cause a world of problems because selecting the top 8 teams would be a judgement call - much like selecting NCAA bubble teams. The only way anything like this could work would be to take the region winners and runners-up and make it 32 teams.
DragonFire Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 If 8 teams were arbitrarily selected, then you'd have 8 teams from Louisville and Lexington selected. Folks, it's already the Sweet 128. Eight teams in every region, 16 regions, and they play a single elimination tournament from there. Some teams already make it via a second chance, why do it twice?

There are too many quality teams and players sitting at home with little chance of playing in this event as it is. I say we need to open our minds and find a way to make this tournament even better.
Thatswhatshesaid Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Just for fun, which 8 teams would you pick for this years tournament?

I say we need to open our minds and find a way to make this tournament even better. The tournament is perfect just the way it is. If you do this, you ruin the regional tournaments, IMO, because the only fair way to do it would be to do what Wireman suggested and let the runner-ups in as well. Look at the districts right now...they're basically meaningless. Granted, the regions wouldn't be as bad because there would still be drama, but not nearly as much. No offense, but this is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. But, others may not feel that way. As it is, I'm with DragonFire. Every team has their chance during the district and regional tournaments. If you just picked the "top" 8 teams...that would be a nightmare. And, we likely would end up with a bunch of extra Louisville teams. That wouldn't generate extra interest. In fact, that would ruin the Sweet 16 because it would make a small-school, cinderella run to a title almost impossible. It would turn the Sweet 16 into the LIT.

I say we need to open our minds and find a way to make this tournament even better. Classify. Right now EVERY team has a shot in the post season regardless of whether they won a regular season game or not. Either classify, or leave it as it is.
doomer Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 Just for fun, which 8 teams would you pick for this years tournament? Obviously it won't affect this year's tournament. Also as far as it being only "Lexington or Louisville teams", if they are the top 8, then that is who should be selected IMO I can pick seven: J-Town, Scott County, Boone, Ballard, Franklin County and GRC. I am not saying it would be perfect, but I believe it would be BETTER.
swamp thang Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 If they were truly a quality team, they'd be playing in Rupp this week. I'm with "Thatswhatshesaid". Post the 8 quality teams that you think should be added and let the BGP fans of those teams not included let you know how they feel about this plan.

Feel free to add the 8th yourself. I have to disagree with you on your first sentence however.

Post the 8 quality teams that you think should be added and let the BGP fans of those teams not included let you know how they feel about this plan. I disagree. There are a lot of quality teams not in the Sweet 16 this year and every other. That's the beauty of the high school postseason, IMO. You can't sacrifice the excitement and drama of the regional tournaments in attempt to get all the contenders in the Sweet 16. They have their chance. They have no complaint. They missed the Sweet 16 because they lost on the court. Period. Nothing needs to be fixed here. Also, classifying would also be a disaster. The KHSAA Sweet 16 is awesome the way it is. Any changes would only make it worse.
doomer Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 Maybe it depends on what region one is in then.
