My son was 16 for the first week of his senior football season. He was in his right grade.

Started to school at 4-5 years of age?

The cutoff for kids is Oct 1. So if you have a August/Sept birthday you are on the young end if you start with your "normal" age group. If most kids have already turned 5 then those others are going to be 4 for a month or two in kindergarten when the new school year starts.

I've actually seen Whetsel play several times, with the first time being in the 7th grade state tournament when he was playing with Rose Hill and led them to the state title over Georgetown.

I saw him again over the summer with the Northeast KY Royals. I believe Mike Terry played with them as well.

Yet you didn't rate Terry? interesting.

Because he had already been mentioned by several on here. Terry had a good tournament both his 7th and 8th grade year, with both he and Whetsel being the top 2 scorers in the majority of their games, along side the Gregg kid.

Not true. Too many people speculate when they don't know. There is no reason to hold Pike back because of sports. He has the size and everything else needed to be a top athlete if he were a sophomore right now. Very little sports advantage gained by him being a freshman, as evidenced by the fact that he is playing varsity anyway.

I know that when he stoped dominating in football he repeated the seventh grade.

BTW...isn't Terry a hold back as well?

Seemed to work out in his dad's favor when he was held back in middle school. As far as I know, it wasn't for academic or social reasons. Big difference and a lot easier to get noticed when 19 year-old seniors are playing against 16 and 17-year old seniors.

So wouldn't it make sense for everyone to do it seeing how everyone has that same opportunity? As long as kids are going to be young enough to play their senior year then why not? What are the disadvantages of holding a kid back? Staying back and giving yourself more time to mature in high school is smart. If you know at a young age that your child is going to have a chance to get his college education paid for through sports, then why not give him every advantage to do so? It might save some of the parents about $100,000. :idunno:

I believe that starting college with an extra year of maturity can be a plus also. Whether or not the kid is playing sports at that level.

I think EC12 was refering to diaperdandy's post when he said Mike Terry is "one of if not the best in the 16th".

Terry is good. One of the top in the state. He has a lot of upside.

Thanks RA09 that is what I was referring to.

Here are my thoughts based on who I have actually seen play this year.....

Jaylan Beckham (Lexcath)

Tamron Manning (Scott Co)

Taylor Barnette (Lexington Christian)

Robbie Stenzel (Clark)

Vinnie Zollo (Clark)

Brandon Wilder (Henry Clay)

BJ Combs (Hazard)

Treg Setty (Mason)

King twins (Deming)

Ryan Fucci (Tates Creek)

Marcelllus Barksdale (Tates Creek)

Tim Knipp (Elliott)

IMO, it doesn't make sense to for a kid to give up their friends and stay back a year if they are making the grades and are doing fine socially and in sports. It is awfully hard to tell in 8th grade if someone will get an athletic scholarship. The chances of a kid going on to play college basketball is very minimal.

Kids used to start first grade at age 5-6. Late birthdays, such as December started at age 5.

Skaggs at Russell seems like a real player already and will only get better.
