Best Freshmen and Sophomores in the State?

Featured Replies

Doubtful...Pike is solid but the following TRUE freshman are all much bigger basketball prospects and better IMO:

6'3 Tamron Manning (Scott Co)

6'1 Jaylan Beckham (Lexcath)

6'0 Desmond Dorsey (J'town)

6'1 Isaiah Ivey (Scott Co)

5'10 Chris Harrison (Trinity)

6'0 Jordan Brewer (Larue County)

6'4 Daniel Ross (J'town)

6'0 Taylor Barnette (Lexington Christian)

6'1 Tanner Broughton (Knox Central)

6'0 Ryan Whetsel (Ashland)

6'2 BJ Combs (Hazard)

6'8 Lemon Gregory (Muhlenberg South)

6'6 Devan Rowan (North Oldham)

All are contributing much more than Pike is at Dixie.

Not sure Beckham is 6'1", I was told he is 5'11". Also I question Ivey's hieght at 6'1"

Seemed to work out in his dad's favor when he was held back in middle school. As far as I know, it wasn't for academic or social reasons. Big difference and a lot easier to get noticed when 19 year-old seniors are playing against 16 and 17-year old seniors.
Parent of a 16 year old senior should have their head examined.

Why is that if they are excelling academically and athletically and started school when they were supposed to? I'm not sure if it is still possible for this to happen, but many kids used to start 1st grade at age 5. This would make it possible for a kid to finish their senior football season before turning 17.

And this list is not your own. Next.

Never said it was my list.

These are just some of the names that are mentioned by both "Tate" Johnson and Fields of the CJ. Having seen all of the above that I mentioned though, either on the AAU circuit or in summer HS leagues, I feel the list I compiled would have been the same regardless of whether those two made a list or not.

Beckham and Ivey are both listed at 6'1. Having stood next to them though, I'd say both are in the 5'11-6'0 range.

Wow, you get around to have seen all of these freshmen play.:thumb:

Nope, the post said playing basketball (which is this time of year, obviously) and 16yr. old seniors. I don't think the post was with Doogie Howser in mind.

Original post said all sports, not just basketball. I've known several kids in this category who were very good athletes and good students (not eggheads). Obviously, the youngest seniors in basketball would be 17 nowadays.

I saw the majority of the kids that I mentioned when I went to the state AAU tournament in late April.

Did you see Whetsel from Ashland play?

If Pike was held back for strictly sports reasons that is sad. I would hope that isn't the case and know nothing about the situation. Having said that, Dixies current bigs werent very good, and to me while Pike was better than whoever was playing over him, he still has a lot of work. So if he really is supposed to be a sophmore of junior, then it might be an advantage for him that he is only a freshman and has more time to work on it. There really is a huge advantage in being an old 18 or 19 year old senior playing against 16 and 17 year olds.

And I think Thelen from CovCath, while maybe not one of the best in the state at this point, will be in the next two years. He has a lot to work on, but has a ton of upside.

My son was 16 for the first week of his senior football season. He was in his right grade.

I've actually seen Whetsel play several times, with the first time being in the 7th grade state tournament when he was playing with Rose Hill and led them to the state title over Georgetown.

I saw him again over the summer with the Northeast KY Royals. I believe Mike Terry played with them as well.

Thelen is solid around the rim but needs to improve his ball handling tremendously and add a mid range game to his arsenal. If he can improve in those two areas, I agree he'll be tough over the next two years.
