Yes, SK was a tremendous team when the re-alignment happened...but they probably won't even get out of the district this year. I don't expect to see the Pioneers in New Castle, although they're a young team and could hit their stride at the right time and surprise...

 

In their three years in the 8th, SK lost in the SFs, the finals, and last year in the first round.

 

I'm not saying there's no basis for any of the alignment conspiracy theories...but in this case, I doubt it. From what I know of SK, they weren't very happy about the move.

 

You completely forgot about Walton-Verona, which is also in NKY... Walton-Verona has been in the 8th for decades...

Walton-Verona has actually only been in the 8th region for basketball since the late 90's. For a long time, Walton-Verona played in the 8th region for baseball and the 9th Region for basketball.

I'm not implying anything, I was just wondering.

They are in the same region, the 13th. They're just in different districts, which to me makes absolutely no sense.

 

They were originally going to be in the same district, with Clay Co. moving to the 14th region. Clay Co. did not want to leave their 13th region legacy and were able to convince someone to allow them to stay. That created a ripple effect that put Clay back in the 49th and moved South Laurel into the 50th with Corbin, Whitley and Williamsburg with Lynn Camp moving out to the 51st.

 

It would seem logical for North and South to be in the same district as well as Corbin and Lynn Camp, but my guess is that it's pretty difficult to get it perfect.

Does anyone have a map of KY divided up by regions? That would be interesting to look at.

Fan, as much as I want to agree with you, rumor around Georgetown is there is not going to be another HS. The main reason is Admin not wanting to disrupt sports programs. They won't be able to put the same caliber teams if they have to split the county up.

All I am saying is that if the population projections come to fruition, Scott County will not be able to avoid a split forever. Right now the population in Scott County is close to equal to some neighboring counties (with 3 high schools) at over 40,0000. The projections I have seen have Scott County surpassing them by as many as 20,000 people in future years. If this does indeed happen I don't believe Scott County will be able to avoid a split to just keep their sports programs in place. Just my opinion.

Yeah, but instead of having another good team in the state tournament from the old 11th, you put Scott Co. in there with them and take one of those teams out who deserves to be in the Sweet 16 and replace them with a mediocre 8th Region team. Now I understand some years there are exceptions like this year's Anderson Co. team and the Shelby Co. team that had a nice run a few years ago. By the way, ColonelMike, I bet you were really happy to see them go. Could've been a lot worse in '07.

It seems like a lot of favors being done if you ask me. Its like Pineville. They moved them out of Bell Co's district when Harlan schools have to go through Pineville's city limits to get to Bell Co. and Middlesboro HS. At that time (unlike this year) Bell's program was much stronger than Knox Central and the other teams in that district. And guess what. A Pineville administator is on the Board of Controls. The alighnment IMO is becoming a political move. The 12th region wanted the Laurel Co. schools out of the region. Mission accomplished. Thats my opinion.

The only other possible way -- without having a region with almost 30 teams -- is to split the 9th Region down the middle, with half the schools in one region and half in another, and filling it out with outlier schools like Gallatin, Grant, Williamstown, Pendleton, Bracken, etc. Pretty sure the 9th Region schools and their fans don't want that, and I doubt the schools I mentioned want to leave their respective regions (8th and 10th).

Scott County was separated by Franklin County from almost all of the region, with Scott County only barely attached to the 8th along the Scott County / Owen County border. Although I'm not certain, I know of no other region similarly set up.

 

As for Anderson County being the "exception"...well, in stacking this Anderson County team up with the region champs of the 2000s... Oldham County region champs (4x this decade), the Shelby County champs (2x), the Scott County and Bullitt East champs...I would rank this Anderson team somewhere in the middle. Definitely not quite as good as the first two Oldham teams that won the 8th this decade, or the Shelby County team with Slaughter, but perhaps better than the last two Oldham champs and last year's Shelby team. Toss-up between this AC team and the BE champs. Anderson is the exception in that there hasn't been too many teams not named Oldham County / Shelby County / Scott County to win the 8th, but Anderson certainly isn't the exception if you're saying they're much better a lot of the previous champs.

Scott Co. dominated the region in the 90s basically from the time Coach Hicks got there until 2000 and then went through a stretch where they weren't as strong. During the 4 years, including this one, Scott Co. has been in the 11th region they would be heavy 8th region favorites every year.
