The Good of Football

Featured Replies

With, some not so flattering news stories recently. I thought it would be good to hear about some of the good things that have came from, and will continue to come from the sport of football. This can be personal stories about what football did for you, or it can be generalized statements about what football does for the youth of Kentucky and the nation as a whole.

Let's hear it.

Somerset High School football team has had at least 9 players saved since the beginning of the season. Some through the witnessing of fellow players and some through activities and fellowship from Fellowship of Christian Athletes / Athletes in Action. At least two players accepted Jesus Christ as their savior and gave the lives to God, in the football field-house after practices during the season. All together there have been well over 20 athletes saved this year both male and female during FCA related activities.

Just goes to show that the government may try to keep God out of schools but our kids still have something to say about that.

I don't have a specific story, but I do completely entitle football to the person I am today. It gave me confidence, a great work ethic, and I made so many lifelong friends. Thank God for high school football.

You were doing pretty good with your story until your last sentence. For the 5,098,540,721st time, the kids can pray in school all they want. It just can't be organized by the school.

If you could have heard the laurels of the honorees at the "That's My Boy" award dinner last night, you would know that the GOOD in HS/College FB FAR outweighs the minority of bad eggs that you hear about. It's a case of bad news sells making the ugly seem prominent.

I completely concur. There is no sense in trying to restate your quote for my thoughts.

Football offers physical and mental adversity to kids and matches those adversities with oppurtunities to overcome them. It also allows for hard Physical work a lost item in our society. These are just a few.

I'll share my son's story:

He played football from 3rd grade until Junior year of high school. Football taught him that to be the best, he had to compete at a high level day in and day out. He learned that sometimes, no matter how hard you compete, there will be someone better. He learned to overcome adverstity, work as a part of the whole, have focus, self-discipline and an indomitable spirit. He learned that sometimes, blood, sweat and tears is rewarded, and sometimes it results in defeat. He learned to keep going after being knocked down. And, through the biggest of all his adversities, he found his life's calling.

I learned about hard work, discipline, teamwork and handling victory and defeat with dignity.

I also learned a valuable lesson about dealing with adversity. I suffered an injury during the 1st scrimmage my senior season that required 2 surgeries. I missed all but the final 3 games of the season. I watched a team of 110 players end the season with 35 players when 68% of the team quit due to a horrible head coach and the way he mishandled young men. I refused to quit. I did not want to let my team down and felt horrible that I could not be on the field with them. I watched my team go 0-7 and begged the doctor to let me come back and play before my 2nd surgery. He agreed. And while we finished a dismal 1-9, that 1 victory was so sweet and I was happy to be a part of it. I learned that no matter what, you never quit on your teammates and you should always finish what you started.

So would you take FCA, AIA, and First Priority out of the schools?

I don't know what the last one is, but the others are student-run, aren't they?

The FCA is ran with headquarters in Kansas City, MO. I believe that there is usually a coach or other teacher that is a site "sponsor". So, to say it is student ran.......I'm not so sure. Anyone have a better insight to the FCA and the way it is currently ran? I am speaking mostly from memory when I was a member at Greenup County.

This is GREAT JD, praise God! Sommerset has obvioulsy got some people working towards the things that really matter.

Again, great news and thanks so much for posting this.

Ram, with JD's post it certainly didn't take long to see some good in not just football but things that are far more important than football will ever be.

JD, as far as the underlined part of your post, you are 100% correct! This country is "morally bankrupt" and has let a huge minority rule over the majority. JMO.

I'll apologize for straying and will stop with that, don't want to start a P&R thread.

Another great statement, and very true.

Like all school clubs, they have at least one sponsor or club leader from the faculty. First Priority is much like FCA, just not focused on only athletes. But these are clubs that students can elect to join just as they could the Chess Club, Speech and Drama Club, etc.
