Voice of Reason Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Congratulations to Beechwood's offensive lineman Matt Miller on committing to Brown University of the Ivy League. That is a great accomplishment both on the football side and the academic side.
Clyde Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Big-time for Mr. Miller. Is this the big lineman I read about with a big ACT score as well? Congrats.
DMZ76 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Matt Miller CONGRATULATIONS!! Well done, young man! Your parents must be ECSTATIC!
BlueChip Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Congratulations to Matt, your future looks bright!

BlueChip Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Committing and signing sound like two different things to me. Why would he only committ on signing day instead of signing? Anyone have any insight on this?
bugatti Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Committing and signing sound like two different things to me. Why would he only committ on signing day instead of signing? Anyone have any insight on this? Well, you don't have to sign on signing day. Heck, you don't have to sign period. Maybe his decision was not made until yesterday? Host of reasons.
BlueChip Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Well, you don't have to sign on signing day. Heck, you don't have to sign period. Maybe his decision was not made until yesterday? Host of reasons. Okay, that makes sense. I didn't realize that you didn't have to sign. I thought signing was almost like a legal agreement or something. Maybe not! Thanks for the insight.

Maybe not! Thanks for the insight. I believe committments are verbal and non-binding. Signings (letter of Intent) bind an athlete to attending that institution to play that sport.
Ram Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Okay, that makes sense. I didn't realize that you didn't have to sign. I thought signing was almost like a legal agreement or something. Maybe not! Thanks for the insight. Committing is a verbal agreement that you or the school can back out of. After you sign you legally bound to that school, and if you resend, you either loose a year of eligibility, or you have to drop down a level of college to play. The same is true for the school, once you sign, they have to honor that agreement and give you a roster spot.
quickslick Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I would say that in this case ... it probably has a lot more to do with the fact that Ivy League schools do not give athletic scholarships. To be more clear ... young Matthew is academically gifted, as well as a good football player. He is probably getting an academic scholarship--and was asked (due to his skill) to be a member of the football team.
Beechnut Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Congratulations Matt!!!! It's an honor and a privilege to say I've watched you grow up into a fine young man and football player! AND, to get to go to Brown.....You earned it. Enjoy!
papagrit Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Congratulations to this young man!! I can only hope that my two son's aspire to this achievment. I've always told my boys to get the academic scholarship and then play football to have fun! To be able to play for an Ivy League School is outstanding! Congrats again!
Blackshirts Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Congrats to Matt Miller and Brown getting a fine player.
