It's funny how some people try to put words in your mouth. Who said anything about not wanting the King Twins. I never even referred to the "twins" Your comment must be directed toward someone who has made a comment in that nature. But since you brought it up. I think everyone knows why they play for Deming and not somewhere else.

Coach Johnson has a dilemna. The King twins are blue-chippers who have great moves to the basket as well as good shooting range, and are capable of putting big numbers on the scoreboard. Mitchell and Caldwell have come strides in their ball-handling abilities and Garth Grause has the potential to be a dominant big-man.

 

If Coach Johnson chooses to run his offense through Grause, it would become more deliberate, and be predicated on an inside-out attack, making the outside shot the modus operendi, or dependent upon Grause's ability to score consistently down on the block.

 

The twins are much more suited to an "open offense" where the defense is spread, and they can either draw and dish, which they are good at (i.e. 1st half vs Brossart) or simply take their defender off of the bounce.

 

In the open setting Grause is relegated to a garbage man, who has to get his points off of rebound-stickbacks, or become the recipient of the dish from one of the guards. That seems to be the path chosen by the coaching staff, and it is effective if they can generate enough points to outscore their opponents. Unfortunately, the Grause camp views this as not playing team ball, or that Garth is being left out of the offense - ergo, the controversy.

 

Grause would thrive in the Brossart system where we primarily play (or would like to play) the post-offense oriented system, and have good luck playing inside-out, as evidenced throughout the Troy Cooper era, but with the hand that Johnson and Deming has been dealt they have to play to their strength, and that is definitely with the King twins, who incidentally, are going to be there for two more years.

 

My focus would be on playing much better defense at the other end of the floor and not allowing a player like Flanagan to beat you. Calvary beating Deming is not so shocking. The Cougars beat Deming also in the 2007 "A" 73-71, and I do think that the Brossart-Deming game took a lot out of the Devils, as evidenced by missed shots and free-throws down the stretch Saturday night.

 

Had the opportunity to watch Deming over the holidays and have watched King's on the AAU circuit for a few years. I think Mustang said it perfectly. They have some offensive options at Deming within that starting 5. Where I thought Deming needed to improve was their commitment to team defense.

 

They have stretches where they tend to go one on one offensively which when it works you talk about how great that player is but when it backfires and ends in a turnover or a bad shot :cry:.

 

I had a very good coach tell me a bad shot is just like a turnover. The other team is usually going the other way with numbers.

 

The King twins are good enough to keep Deming relevant in the All A the next couple of years.

For the very first time since Stan Steidel and his committee organized the statewide "A" tournament under its present format back in 1990, the dream of allowing a truly small school from Northern Kentucky (Campbell, Kenton) to perform on a grand stage, showcasing their players, who would never have a chance to compete in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen State Tournament (or even a Fifth-Third tournament) will be realized when Calvary Christian takes the floor at McBrayer Arena at 5:30pm on Thursday.

This tournament has served this purpose in many other areas of the state, but the Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Silver Groves of the area, have never been the beneficiariay. The "mid-majors" Holy Cross, St. Henry, NCC, and Brossart (all who have been to the Sweet Sixteen in modern history) have dominated the local "A" State landscape. This Calvary Christian team has been a "work-in-progress" since this group of seniors came on the scene four years ago. They have played together since then, taking their lumps, working for this day.

Thursday evening the rest of the state will be introduced to Joe Flanigan, Ethan Glass, Chase O'Keefe, Pierce Kohls, Chase Vandermeer and the Calvary Christian Cougars for the first time, and Mike Fields of the Lexington Herald-Leader, who devotes most of his time covering the upper-crust of the state will pen his first ever story about the "boys from Taylor Mill" as well as the "boys from Sandy Hook" or Georgetown.

Yes, this is an evarage 2-year enrollment figure, per the KHSAA, of the 10th Region schools.

 

Interesting to me is the huge gap between the "smallest big school" (Mason County) and the "biggest small school (Bishop Brossart).

 

I wonder how many 10th region followers would have guessed that Mason County and Brossart would be 8-9 in 10th Region enrollment?

Again, good luck to Calvary at Richmond. They deserve to represent Region 10 in the All A. Hopefully everyone will get back on this threads topic. If you want to discuss BBHS as an All A school please start your own thread on that topic. I am sure you will get some responses.

Those enrollment figures leave Brossart with under 300 kids in the 10-12th grades, and the cut off for the "A" is 425 in 10-12. What exactly do you think they should be--Is Bracken an "A" school in your opinion? Guess this is a testament to the quality of their program, and their ability to overachieve??

There are schools with close to 600 students in 9-12 (the KHSAA measuring stick) in the "A". Schools like Brossart, Holy Cross, NCC, Beechwood, St. Henry, etc. aren't even close to the max??
