Not sure you should compare King to Flanagan or talk of earning respect, not to take away from Calvary Christian, they played their hearts out, BUT King did attempt to duplicate his game last night, just as he has every game. The majority of the crowd and teammates can easily see this, why does Coach Johnson continue to allow ME BALL. Who knows when Deming will get an opportunity like they had last night again. If someone doesn't open their eyes and do something about this, district will be no different.

 

I think Deming will be just fine when it comes to the District. You are always questioing Coach Johnson. What would you do? Who would you want to have the ball in crucial situations for Deming? Seems you have all the answers why don't you share it with the rest of us.

 

It really grips me that when Deming wins 6 in a row there are very few to no post on here. Very few positive. But when the Devils lose everyone wants to add there 2 cents and rip some of the players and coaching staff. You have to take the good with the bad.

There is only 1 concession stand and the potties are not pretty at all! There was a packed house last night with most of the crowd being from Mt. Olivet. If Calvary Christian's game plan was to get the Deming 5 in foul trouble, then with the help of the refs, their game plan worked. Another note, someone in the Calvary Christian's cheering section blew a very high pitched whistle when the Deming kids shot free throws. It took the refs, until 2:00 left in the 4th quarter to make an announcement about it. I know that noise makers are against KHSAA regulations, this should have been addressed sooner. I was also disappointed with the team of refs that was sent in to handle this game, one of which is commonly seen refereeing elementary school games in Maysville, working for St. Patrick. I would have thought that a game of this caliber would have been a priority for the more experienced refs. Where was Eric Thornsbury, Bart Lennox or even Bo Queen for goodness sake, Bo worked the game against Brossart the night before. :irked:

 

I talked to Bart yesterday and he was heading to West Virginia Tech for Mid South Conference game. He told me Bo Queen was on his way to Pikeville for Mid South Conference Game. Said Bo had to get back after that to Georgetown for the Toyota Classic Finals with Cary Lyle and Mondo Angelucci.

The refs by no means cost Deming the game. As a fan your never going to be completely happy with the officials. However, they called a respectable game. They in no way persuaded the outcome of the game.

Nicholas County will be getting a new gym soon.

 

It will be located right next door to the present facility.

Coach Johnson has a dilemna. The King twins are blue-chippers who have great moves to the basket as well as good shooting range, and are capable of putting big numbers on the scoreboard. Mitchell and Caldwell have come strides in their ball-handling abilities and Garth Grause has the potential to be a dominant big-man.

 

If Coach Johnson chooses to run his offense through Grause, it would become more deliberate, and be predicated on an inside-out attack, making the outside shot the modus operendi, or dependent upon Grause's ability to score consistently down on the block.

 

The twins are much more suited to an "open offense" where the defense is spread, and they can either draw and dish, which they are good at (i.e. 1st half vs Brossart) or simply take their defender off of the bounce.

 

In the open setting Grause is relegated to a garbage man, who has to get his points off of rebound-stickbacks, or become the recipient of the dish from one of the guards. That seems to be the path chosen by the coaching staff, and it is effective if they can generate enough points to outscore their opponents. Unfortunately, the Grause camp views this as not playing team ball, or that Garth is being left out of the offense - ergo, the controversy.

 

Grause would thrive in the Brossart system where we primarily play (or would like to play) the post-offense oriented system, and have good luck playing inside-out, as evidenced throughout the Troy Cooper era, but with the hand that Johnson and Deming has been dealt they have to play to their strength, and that is definitely with the King twins, who incidentally, are going to be there for two more years.

 

My focus would be on playing much better defense at the other end of the floor and not allowing a player like Flanagan to beat you. Calvary beating Deming is not so shocking. The Cougars beat Deming also in the 2007 "A" 73-71, and I do think that the Brossart-Deming game took a lot out of the Devils, as evidenced by missed shots and free-throws down the stretch Saturday night.

Good luck to Calvary Christian. This was one of those games where you hated to see either team lose. Deming needs to keep their chin up and be proud of their accomplishments.

It was a great game. I went down to Nicholas County to see this one. I actually was only 1 of 4 to pick Calvary in this. Calvary will represent the 10th well. They weren't the team in the 37th I thought would go, but they are a very good team.

Congrats to Calvary, was kinda pulling for Deming since they are in the 38th. I have coached against Calvary in baseball and that is a program that is truly class act and I wish them the best in Richmond.

I didn't realize I was "ripping" players or the coaching staff apart and I don't have all the answers. I am stating a FACT. You can ask the majority of fans in the stands and they would agree. I'm not shorting any player either. Kyle King is a good player and yes he's one guy that I would want to have the ball in a crucial situation. Is he the only one? NO. He gets the ball and drives to the basket time after time after time. Yes he scores alot of points each game, but he misses/turns the ball over quite a few times as well. He seldom looks for an open man, even when 3 defenders are on him. He never runs the plays. Not sure if he can't remember them or just has scoring as his main goal. Why practice plays every day and not run them? Do you see how this would make other team members feel. It is also evident to fans.

WOW!!! Glad to see Calvary getting to a big tourney and getting the opportunity to play on the big stage. For the very first time since Stan Steidel and his committee organized the statewide "A" tournament under its present format back in 1990, the dream of allowing a truly small school from Northern Kentucky (Campbell, Kenton) to perform on a grand stage, showcasing their players, who would never have a chance to compete in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen State Tournament (or even a Fifth-Third tournament) will be realized when Calvary Christian takes the floor at McBrayer Arena at 5:30pm on Thursday.

This tournament has served this purpose in many other areas of the state, but the Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Silver Groves of the area, have never been the beneficiariay. The "mid-majors" Holy Cross, St. Henry, NCC, and Brossart (all who have been to the Sweet Sixteen in modern history) have dominated the local "A" State landscape.

This Calvary Christian team has been a "work-in-progress" since this group of seniors came on the scene four years ago. They have played together since then, taking their lumps, working for this day.

Thursday evening the rest of the state will be introduced to Joe Flanigan, Ethan Glass, Chase O'Keefe, Pierce Kohls, Chase Vandermeer and the Calvary Christian Cougars for the first time, and Mike Fields of the Lexington Herald-Leader, who devotes most of his time covering the upper-crust of the state will pen his first ever story about the "boys from Taylor Mill" as well as the "boys from Sandy Hook" or Georgetown.
