Yea he did. JJ got I think 8 points off of little jumpers in the lane off passes from the perimeter when CCH ran that defense. Maile would have been a much better choice up there. Wellbrock also couldn't guard Riley which hurt them as CCH had to try and double a few times to keep him from penetrating which left Holmes open for a few wide open 3's.

 

 

Yeah, I mean I think the zone threw Holmes off, but it could have been executed better and I'm sure they'll work on it. Maile at the top is a better idea, and Wellbrock down low. People need to remember that when the ball gets down on the low wing and the big guy has to go out [isler did this a couple of times] then the other low post player needs to drop in to the middle more to defend the inside.

I caught most of the 4th qt. on CCH internet radio. They do a pretty good job, but when they said Riley really wasn't that good of a PG, all that went out the window.

Alright well just as fact Maschinot is quicker, faster, jumps better, he is the better athlete there isn't any question about it. Brett may be there when he matures more physically, but the difference is in their mindsets right now. Riedinger knows the game so well, and already has a feel for playing the point position. Maschinot is still learning a lot but getting by on a lot of athleticism despite his lack of height. His shot has definitely improved, but Riedinger still has the better outside shot. I would also say to watch out for Maschinot's defense to improve dramatically in the near future. As Clyd mentions he needs to be playing with more confidence. Once the game slows down for him mentally he will be a good defender.

 

I think the biggest reason you see Maschinot in there now over Riedinger is the ability to not get trapped. When facing pressure, Maschinot is able to use his quickess to avoid traps, where as Brett is more likely to get caught up in the trap leading to the turnover. I am also surprised on the knock on Maschinot's passing. Yes he is a youmg guy who makes some turnovers, but more often than not he grts the ball to the open man. How often does he make a good pass only to have the guy miss the shot?

They both saw the Scott County game (and they broadcast it because they enjoy the Holmes team) and they saw Riley struggle somewhat against some of the Scott County pressure. (Note that it wasn't just him that struggled so he wasn't being singled out.) So the ballhandling issue is certainly a fair question. In NKY, he's a great PG but against top teams with good size guards he is not AS strong as he is up here.

 

It certainly doesn't mean that he can't play PG and they'll be the first to commend him (and they spoke highly of him during the game). They simply questioned one aspect of his game which they noticed against Scott County and wondered if CCH could attempt to exploit it.

Honestly, youre probably right about the trapping issue, however Reidinger seems to do fine with that in JV. Not sure how he would on varsity though.

 

Maschinot will be fine, no one is saying otherwise, but if he wants to be successful in the next 2 years he HAS to cut out the one handed push pass. It's not more often than not that he gets the ball to the open man unless youre talking about the man outside the arc. His ball just doesn't have enough on it, and it's easy to pick off due to the very obvious push pass method he uses. 98% of the time right now Maschinot goes to his right only and does a push pass. If he can work on his left and cut out those passes [which he is not the only one guilty of, the entire JV guard system has an issue with it] he will be a really good PG.

I listened to the game yesterday. I thought they did a good job. They spoke highly of the Holmes players, and said they are the best team in the state. I wonder why Holmes don't have there games on the web ? Is it a budget probelm ?

Riley's ball handling has been much better than they gave him credit for. The Scott Co game is ONE game. Anyone who saw him last night saw his ball handling skills were superb. I'd be willing to bet NOBODY in nky can handle the ball better than him and the scout I was sitting with said the same thing. Riley did struggle a little in the SC game at times but if I remember correctly, it was when JJ went out that Riley struggled.

 

As for Rico, I knew he played well but didn't realize he had a double double with 15 points and 14 boards. Very impressive showing for him. With Pittman not having great games recently offensively, Rico and JJ both have really picked up the slack.
