Hey Wireman what about Rick Mays from Elliott.

I can't believe Bobby Keith hasn't been mentioned. He had some great teams at Clay County.

Dave Schulz or Rodney Woods.

The only reason Coach Keith isn't mentioned is because it has to be a current coach. If not, he would be at the top of a lot of lists.

This is a tough one.

 

Roscoe Denney would be a great choice, but he doesn't want to be a head coach anymore.

 

Dinky Phipps is another nice choice. He does more with less than anyone else in the state, but he is a Barbourville Tiger through and through.

 

Mike Jones is perhaps one of the best coaches in the state. People remember the Harlan teams he had in the mid-90s. I don't think a lot of people realize that not only were they talented, but they just didn't make a lot of mistakes. A great sign of strong leadership.

 

However, I am a little biased on my choice. I played for Billy Hicks. He is hands down the best coach I have ever known in terms of developing players. Also, a little known fact is that he uses no profanity and calls every player by their first name - not just "Jones get in there" or "Smith play some defense." May not sound like much, but as a teenager it was great to have someone in an authoritative position treat me and the rest of the team with dignity and respect.

To me it depends on where the school is located and the dynamics of the students involved.

If it's a country school (mountains or most of the "County" Schools, I would go with Billy Hicks.

If the school is in an inner city I would choose Tim Riley from Warren Central.

For a private school I'd choose Mike Code.

 

One of the best - period, regardless if it's public or private.

These are 2 of the best. Jim Hicks is probably the best in the state that "no one knows about". Faust, year in and year out amazes people in NKY.

 

As for starting a program. I think Cooper HS in NKY got it right this year by starting the program with Tim Sullivan. He will do a great job over there and already is.

Coach Faust would be a great choice, also Dave Henely of Holmes, he knows how to use his talent.

He also had success at Evarts, his alma mater. Evarts made it to the regional semifinals three times, once when he was a player (1970) and once when he was coach (1983).
