Billy Hicks led Scott County to a state championship in 2007. He is from Evarts. Does that count?

 

Actually, all the good coaches really are from Harlan.

 

Happy Osborne is from the Lynch/Benham/Cumberland area. He has had a great career at Georgetown College.

 

Bernie Bickerstaff, who, last season, coached the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, is from the same area as Osborne.

 

That's a pretty basketball savvy group from Harlan County.

Steve Wright has just as good or better credentials, to be honest. And, he's won a Sweet 16 championship.

 

 

 

He topped the 500-win mark this year and has won four regional titles and two All "A" Classic state championships. He won 11 district titles and his teams were regional runner-up three times (once at Cawood, once at Harlan and once at Clay)

 

He started coaching in the 83-84 season at Cawood and coached all-stater and Kentucky All-Star Nick Sanford. He was an assistant at Cawood in 1981 when Mr. Basketball Phil Cox was a senior.

 

He coached 1995 Mr. Basketball Charles Thomas at Harlan and also coached all-stater and Kentucky All-Star Todd Cox (1995) and all-staters Michael Jones, Casey Lester and William Fields at Harlan.

 

He returned to his alma mater and led Clay to the state tournament in 2001.

I know it doesn't mean as much, but it is possible that Jones' All "A" state championships are more impressive than Wright's Sweet 16 championship.

 

Harlan beat a University Heights team that was very good. I think UHA had five D-1 players on that team.

 

Charles Thomas' junior year was Jones' best chance at a state title, but they didn't make the Sweet 16. I'm afraid to post what I think happened (against Clay Co.) because my post will be edited....haha :thumb:

 

But, I think Wright is an excellent coach. Here is my question: Since Wright and Pietrowski are rival coaches, I wonder who will end their respective career as the "better" coach.

Won more than 500 games and is the first coach since the great Bobby Keith to lead a team to at least three straight 13th Region titles. Keith guided Clay to seven straight 13th Region titles from 1984 to 1990. He has also coached All staters Jackie Steele, Kelly Day, JP Storm, Richie Riley, Johan Rivera, Ty Proffitt and Mr. Basketball Walt Allen.

I would agree with two out of three but worst coach has to be in Fleming County.

What about Mike Reitz? Hard to argue with a man that has 500 wins.

I think Coach Henley from Covington Holmes .He gets his players to play their stlyle of basketball and has good sub rotations when his team needs them. I would also throw out Coach Listerman from Covington Catholic. He is very good out of getting the best out of what he's got. He has won and made some games close that he should not of been in this year.

I would start with Kevin Spurlock of Clay Co.. He's a proven winner.

 

Al Holland of Hazard knows the way to Rupp Arena. Or Allan Hatcher of Perry Central who also knows the way from anywhere.

Probably Jones. Cawood beat Harlan something like nine of 11 from 84 to 86 when Jones was at Cawood and Hicks was at Harlan. I think they were probably pretty even when Hicks was at Corbin and Jones was at Harlan. Hicks would have won in the years Jones was at Jackson County, but they didn't play very often, if at all.

Obviously Hicks has the top program in the state now at Scott County, but they don't play many 13th Region teams.
