woodsrider
If so what do you think about the manditory unpaid leave our wonderfull governor has come up with? Originally it was to be 3 days to be taken by June 30th. Now it could be up to 24 days over the next 2 years. My wife is a social worker with the state so needless to say we are not too happy with this. http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20090103/NEWS01/901030429/1008/NEWS01 This may belong in P&R but wasn't sure. A mod can move it if need be.
mcpapa
I recently retired from the local Community Mental Health Center. Participated in the state retirement system, but was not a state employee. Hopefully mandatory unpaid leave will not "count against" months of service with respect to retirement benefits.

Not sure if you would call them salary or not. They are in the sense their pay is based on a set number of hours. However they do qualify for comp time and over time. That said they will still have to take the days.

RebelK
I worked for the state fore 28 years and retired with full benefits. I know this doesn't sound good and truly it doesn't sound fair but if it will keep from having to lay off people...then I think it should be done. Losing a few days is way better than standing in an unemployment line.

3wishes
I work for the state but I do not fall nder this categories, our director stated that it would not apply to us, however, I was not upset when I found out about it because I knew it was an alternative to being laid off. I'll take a pay cut anyday to avoid losing my job.
Clyde
Its not limited to the state. I work for a billion $$ privately owned company and we are now required to take 6 unpaid days per quarter. That goes for everyone in the company.
rockmom
Right after 9/11, the industry I worked in plummeted to near nothingness for a while. Several of our competitors laid off significant numbers of staff, management and line-level. I was scared to death. I started my job at the place where I work on 8/1/01. I also had a job, that divied among 5 or 6 other people would be manageable if eliminated. I figured I'd be among the first to be laid off, or I just wouldn't be allowed to stay, since I was under 90 days. I remember walking into an all-employee meeting where our owner was to speak. I was in near tears, because I just knew what was coming. The first thing out of his mouth was, "You will not be losing your jobs." Then, he outlined a plan that he asked us for our agreement upon. Everyone, from himself to the least paid, took an indefinite 10% pay cut. I think you can imagine, given the climate of the tourism industry at that time, we were all beyond grateful. At Thanksgiving, instead of our normal $25 gift card, it was $50. At Christmas, everyone received a $100 Meijer gift card. Normally, there were no bonuses, etc. By May the next year, things were improved, and our pay was reinstated, and we all shared a cut of the profits of the first quarter. And we all still had our jobs.

What is the good solution? This is a pay cut. We decided we could live with the 3 days. But 12 days a year is a big hit. What would you say if your boss told you either everyone could take a pay cut or a few would have to be laid off? And you wouldn't be one those laid off. I've seen it happen too many times where people were told they were safe, and weeks later, they were gone.
