January 3, 200917 yr All of this would seem to make it a virtual certainty that Favre will be gone and retired. The only certainty is that Brett Favre will milk it for everything its worth whether he quits or not. I know that I, personally, cannot wait...I live for the Brett Favre "stay or go" saga. It never gets old. It's funny...if you take away that one freak game vs. Arizona when Favre had 6 TD's... 16 TD and 21 Int MVP! MVP! MVP! M-V-P! Please...go away.
January 3, 200917 yr http://blogs.usatoday.com/thehuddle/2009/01/favre-to-jets-t.html Fuel to the off-season fire with Brett. I hope he takes his time before deciding, but the Jets need to draft a QB anyway.
January 3, 200917 yr Favre is beginning to approximate the ending of Willie Mays' career - another great athlete who hung around a season or two too long and should have retired with the team he is forever linked. I still remember watching Mays play for the Mets (I was 10) and asking my dad, "Why does everyone think he's so great?" Obviously, I figured that out as I got older, but Mays slightly tarnished his incredible resume and reputation by continuing to play after he should have hung up the cleats. Favre is doing the same thing.
January 4, 200917 yr There is no reason to go public with statements like this. Nothing but bad things can come from it and it is an issue that could have been handled in-house and served the same purpose. From the look of the statements, it WAS NOT being handled in house and these players felt there was no other recourse but to tell what they felt. It very much sounds like coaching, management and Favre did not handle his poor play at all but looked the other way.
January 4, 200917 yr I can't seem to remember, was the Jets a great team and Thomas a player who never made a mistake last year, before Favre? Not!
January 4, 200917 yr I can't seem to remember, was the Jets a great team and Thomas a player who never made a mistake last year, before Favre? Not! No, they weren't very good. However Jones has at least openly admitted that if he was turning the ball over and hurting the team he'd want people to speak out and up at him.
January 4, 200917 yr They said he stays to himself when not at practice or games. Is this really their chief complaint?

I agree with 5wide, he ruined his legacy when he signed with the Jets. He should have signed out on a good note with the team that fed him.

I do seem to remember the Jets playing their best this season when they committed to Jones and the running game. When you rely on "the gunslinger", life is like a box of chocolates... One thing is for sure, Brett Favre is no Roland Deschain. He's not worthy to be called a gunsliner. He has forgotten the face of his father.
January 4, 200917 yr From Bill Simmons on ESPN.com ** One 8-8 team (San Diego) is hosting a home game. Our crack ESPN Research Separtment tells us that .500 teams are just 2-7 in Round 1 games since 1972. The only winners prevailed during the '04 playoffs, when the 8-8 Rams beat Seattle and the 8-8 Vikings shocked Green Bay in Lambeau. You might remember Brett Favre single-handedly murdering the Pack in that Vikings game by throwing four picks, followed by the media treating him with kid gloves and making excuses for him afterward. Sound familiar? Note the bolded part. Favre has been handled with kid gloves for ten years, masking the fact that he really hasn't been that good of a quarterback for some time.

January 6, 200917 yr Whatever the reason Brett came back to play this season, it was not EGO @ all! His legacy speaks for itself and what he was capable of doing on the field speaks for itself! Thomas Jones NEVER had the year like he had this season prior to playing w/a QB like Favre. Whether Jones believes what he said to be true or not, he should have done his talking behind closed doors. It always amuzes me when I hear professional athletes say that a teammate keeps to himself. Why is that a problem as long as the guy shows up and works his butt of everyday? If you go back and look at the JETS last 5 games, you would clearly see that the JETS wideouts did not have their best games of the year down the stretch. What I mena is that in any team sport, there is always PLENTY of blame to go around when a team loses or struggles. If there was a Mt. Rushmore for the NFL, it would be hard not to have the mugshot of #4 up there.

An ego that is now writing checks that his body and arm can no longer cash. Gee, I wonder why the Jets' WR's didn't have productive games late in the year? I'm sure it had nothing to do with a rag-armed QB that couldn't throw the ball downfield with any accuracy and constantly made stupid throws that took his team out of the game - and eventually out of playoff contention. You are right about one thing - Favre will rank as one of the best ever. He WAS one of the best active QB's in the game. No longer. He is a below average QB whose time has now passed and it is time for him to look back from the sidelines at his impressive career accomplishments. He is only tarnishing his reputation by hanging around with his skills having so far deteriorated.

Jones lost a shot at the playoffs because of Favre and has a right to express his displeasure. It's a problem when a player keeps to himself because it takes away from team chemistry. I'm not sure if you ever played sports or been in a locker room but being open with your teammates is huge. I work for a pro baseball team and am in the clubhouse everyday. We've had people that kept to themselves and they are the ones people resent. And oddly enough those quiet ones also had the worst performances. The Jets WRs did have a bad stretch of 5 games at the end but it wasn't their fault. It was the man under center who couldn't throw the ball to them. When the ball is consistently under thrown, off target, or to a defensive player, the WRs will not put up stats that they should.
