If he is a student of the HS and his grades are where they are suppose to be, then I have no problem with a HS kid playing HS sports no matter if he is a 9th grader.

 

Grades and schools who allow students to still play sports, even when they don't get good grades (C or higher in all subjects) is another matter where me and many schools part ways but that is another subject for another thread!

 

BTW my comment isn't geared towards Holmes at all! It is just my opinion that a students grades should be more of a concern to the school/community/teachers/parents/himself than his points per game average, sadly that isn't always the case.

Aside from Dontel, the Collins kid is a lot of fun to watch! I just hope he is able to remain focused. He will not be a very big kid in high school but can really distribute and handle the ball.

Why when speaking of Holmes some seem to always find a way to mention grades. The assuptions are always going to be there for some, but it does get old. I mean, we go from talking about a kid who works his tail off day after day getting some well deserved minutes in a varsity game, to "if" his grades are good enough? As far as adopting Ohio rules, no thanks.

I know Coach Forrest of Oldham Co and one thing that he isn't is classless. If Holmes chose to pull their starters in the 3rd, that's their call. That doesn't mean that OC has to do the same. I know that Coach Forrest would have been fine with Holmes keeping their kids in longer. After all, this was a varsity game. The final margin was 24. There's no reason to call a coach classless with that kind of final margin.

 

I agree. One coach's decision should not dictate that other coach's actions.

13 or 14 year old kid gets his first varsity action and plays 4 or 5 minutes and people are already burying him on BGP...nice

 

Wow ... Sensitive much? Not burying him... Said he will be a stud. I was saying it was completely off base for people to say he was Holmes secret weapon for the end of the year. There is a big difference... I was not burying the kid at all. It was the people on here who were making those comments.

Mcclendon is hands down the best JV player, outside of Arnold. He isn't big or strong enough yet to be a contributor at the varsity level, but he's definetly a good enough ball handler to add a little more depth to Holmes by March. He played well against the OC varsity. Sure he didn't score but he was the best ball handler on the court. LIke you said...he's only an 8th grader and honestly, he handled the pressure that OC tried to put on him VERY WELL today...just seemed to force the two shots that he took in the lane.

 

Just wondering ETA, because I haven't seen a whole lot of Holmes' JV squad, but I have yet to see McClendon or Arnold play JV?

Mcclendon is usually strictly a JV player and doesn't even dress varsity but has dressed the past two games FOR WORKING HARD IN PRACTICE. What's so wrong with letting a kid with his talent play when your team has a 39 point lead, and you know he'll see more minutes as a freshman???

 

Jefferson and Hill did the same thing when they were 8th graders. Played JV and saw action in blow outs like tonight...but only when they were completely out of hand. Henley is a very smart coach and knows how to develop his players. I see nothing wrong with rewarding a kid who works hard in practice...regardless of age.

Doug Schloemer played for the Bulldogs as an 8th grader as well. I doubt that Coach Henley (or Coach Flynn, for that matter) would put McClendon in the lineup in a do or die situation. But, what is the harm of letting him get a head start on getting over the varsity jitters?

I don't think Nky has a probelm with him getting minutes. I think his probelm is with people putting pressure on a 8th grader to perform at an high varsity level.

I agree. Pittman is hands down the most talented player on Holmes' team (which you told me at the beginning of the year:sssh:). He will be the #1 ranked player next year in the state, but honestly, I'm not too sure he isn't the best player in the state right now. He has been unreal lately.

I know Pittman is playing great right now, I still believe R. Johnson is the better player, imao he is more ready for the next level, lately I think he has been a little to unselfish, he has an all-around game that I don't think pittman has yet, both are very good players and they will be ranked 1 and 2 next year!

Mike, you'll noticed I posted a similar reply on the last page. These people should know that OC is one of my school's rivals, too.

Too many things to quote so I'll just put them all together:

 

1. I think a lot are way off base regarding Mcclendon. He will in no way, shape, or form be a major contributor this year or see much time for that matter. He WILL however get in to get a little experience in blow outs like tonight. Nothing wrong with that. As someone said earlier, Henley is a great coach and has developed some great players with talent at a young age, so I don't see why some think pressure is being put on Chris because Coach H is playing him?? He won't be put in do or die situations but as the year progresses, you will see him more often and see his role increase. Let's not forget the players he practices against everyday.

 

2. My comment toward Coach Forrest not showing class tonight was probably a bit out of line, after thinking about it. When he saw #15 (pg) scoring at will and taking over against the JV, he pulled him and let him sit the rest of the game.

 

3. Rico faces a lot more pressure than some of us realize. He has AAU and college coaches calling him every night trying to tell him different things to do, rather than just letting him have fun. Rico is the #1 player in the state for a reason though. If people think he's having a rough stretch because he's ONLY averaging 14 a game, I'll take it. Pittman is going to be the star of the team though. IMO there is no team in the state that can match up with him, which is the reason he's dropped 20+ in 4 straight games. Rico, JJ, and Riley all three play to unselfish at times. Pittman benefits GREATLY from this.
