Their is a lot of pressure on all of the Holmes players. McClendon, in time, will be a contributer for Holmes in the years to come. The pressure JJ, Ricardo, Elijah, Jamel, and the remaining players are feeling is coming from those in the stands. AAU coaches yelling at from the stands on how to play, etc. Thank goodness for Henley's calm demeanor because calm is not any part of the coaches in the stands. Hopefully the kids can continue to play as a team, remain patient, not allow the outside (AAU Coaches, College Scouts) pressures interfere what should be another great run and a lot of fun for NKY and the Covington Community to follow and support. Mcclendon is usually strictly a JV player and doesn't even dress varsity but has dressed the past two games FOR WORKING HARD IN PRACTICE. What's so wrong with letting a kid with his talent play when your team has a 39 point lead, and you know he'll see more minutes as a freshman???

 

Jefferson and Hill did the same thing when they were 8th graders. Played JV and saw action in blow outs like tonight...but only when they were completely out of hand. Henley is a very smart coach and knows how to develop his players. I see nothing wrong with rewarding a kid who works hard in practice...regardless of age.

 

After practicing against the talent Holmes has, I think he deserves a reward. This will only pay in the long run. He would walk through 8th grade right now. I heard they took Arnold off JV so he is going to be the main guy, which I think will only make him better.

I truly believe Ricardo is feeling this pressure the most out of all the players. He has had the scouts tugging on his shirt for a number of years. He understands the numbers game and what this year and next will bring him. He is a GREAT kid (they all are great kids) and I hope he begins to settle into his role and is able to enjoy the rest of the year.

Game wasn't as close as the score might indicate.

 

Holmes led 17-4 after the first quarter which was highlighted by a Pittman breakaway one handed wind mill tomahawk dunk. OC missed I believe their first six 3 point attempts which really put them in a hole that they'd never get out of.

 

At halftime Holmes was up 31-9 and the pg for OC (#15) had 7 of their 9 points.

 

Third quarter things got even uglier as Holmes pushed their lead out to 46-11 at the 6 minute mark. During that run, Pittman had another breakaway one handed tomahawk dunk that about brought the rim down...literally. With about 4 minutes left to play in the third, Henley started pulling starters with a 39 point lead.

 

Fourth quarter, no starters played and I believe Holmes only scored 3 points which was the reason for the final margin. Found it somewhat classless though that Henley had all of his starters pulled with 3 minutes left in the third and the coach for OC left his starters in until a minute left in the game. Once Henley had all the starters pulled #15 and Cook (#30?) took over and scored at will against the Holmes jv.

 

Arnold for Holmes played very well and had around 10 points. Pittman was a man among boys again tonight, and I'm pretty sure he scored 20+ points for the 4th consecutive game. He's making a strong case for best player in the state with the way he's played recently...and that's no exaggeration. Several of the college coaches in attendance just started shaking their heads and laughing after his second dunk.

 

I know Coach Forrest of Oldham Co and one thing that he isn't is classless. If Holmes chose to pull their starters in the 3rd, that's their call. That doesn't mean that OC has to do the same. I know that Coach Forrest would have been fine with Holmes keeping their kids in longer. After all, this was a varsity game. The final margin was 24. There's no reason to call a coach classless with that kind of final margin.

The talent pool is going to continue to get deeper for Holmes as long as the kids in grades 6-8 remain focused on academics being number one and the basketball as the guide by their side! The Two Rivers Middle School 6th and 7th grade teams have a load of talent AGAIN!

Arnold has a younger brother who is a freshman 6'2 guard I think he will also challenge for the 5th spot. He had 25 in a freshman game this year. He can already throw it down and he has a nice mid range game.

I was kidding...I just find it amusing everyone wants to rip a 13 or 14 year old kid after watching him play 4 or 5 minutes in his first varsity action..I'm guessing Coach Henley knows what he is doing..kid will be a 3 or 4 year starter at Holmes

I understand, but let a HS kid be that 12th player off the bench, until the kid is in HS. If Ky had the same rule as a lot of states do, would Henley give up one year of the kids eligibly to play him in this game? Of course the answer is no!

 

So next year it's not a problem then?

Yes it is, even more so when its in a bulldogs jersey. Tarheels have become a great feeder for Holmes.
