I was somewhat impressed with his size and athleticism for an eighth grader, but as far as his game and bball IQ... not so much.

 

I agree. Needs to become a little smarter with his shot selection but has nice size and athleticism.

13 or 14 year old kid gets his first varsity action and plays 4 or 5 minutes and people are already burying him on BGP...nice

I agree. Pittman is hands down the most talented player on Holmes' team (which you told me at the beginning of the year:sssh:). He will be the #1 ranked player next year in the state, but honestly, I'm not too sure he isn't the best player in the state right now. He has been unreal lately.

Cov Holmes isn't a small school that needs to play an eight grader to have enough players to play, or to fill it's roster. Let HS kids play HS sports or have a rule like Ohio and a lot of other states do, that only allow four years of playing varsity sports. Sorry Eta Rho there is no reason for a kid in grade school playing HS basketball at a school as large as Holmes.

 

Mcclendon was the 12th man off the bench today and didn't play until around the 5 minute mark of the 4th quarter. Today was the first time he had seen varsity action. He won't see the floor if the game is within 25 points. Henley is just SLOWLY trying to get him a little varsity time to get used to the speed of the game, because honestly, he'll probably be Holmes' 5th starter next year...

Doubtful...but Mcclendon would see more varsity time at other high schools in NKY. He wouldn't be a star by any means but he would start for any D3 school.

I understand, but let a HS kid be that 12th player off the bench, until the kid is in HS. If Ky had the same rule as a lot of states do, would Henley give up one year of the kids eligibly to play him in this game? Of course the answer is no!

Arnold played well and handled the ball better today than previous games, and actually surprised me with his composure. At one point in the game he took an ill advised 3 and missed, while not following his shot, but then hustled down to the other end of the court and got a steal which led to a Holmes 3 pointer.

 

Still has a lot of developing to do. I'd compare him to Pittman of last year. If he can play better defense, he'll crack the starting 5.

I think this is the case. I would keep him on JV just so he can compete against top talent in practice.[iMO] it will bring him along faster playing against the Johnson brothers day in and day out. This is not his year, but next year he will be a key player for Holmes. Henley will do fine job in bringing this young man along.

I was kidding...I just find it amusing everyone wants to rip a 13 or 14 year old kid after watching him play 4 or 5 minutes in his first varsity action..I'm guessing Coach Henley knows what he is doing..kid will be a 3 or 4 year starter at Holmes

There is a lot of pressure on all of the Holmes players. McClendon, in time, will be a contributer for Holmes in the years to come. The pressure JJ, Ricardo, Elijah, Jamel, and the remaining players are feeling is coming from those in the stands. AAU coaches yelling from the stands on how to play, etc. Thank goodness for Henley's calm demeanor because calm is not any part of the coaches in the stands. Hopefully the kids can continue to play as a team, remain patient, not allow the outside (AAU Coaches, College Scouts) pressures interfere what should be another great run and a lot of fun for NKY and the Covington Community to follow and support. Mcclendon is usually strictly a JV player and doesn't even dress varsity but has dressed the past two games FOR WORKING HARD IN PRACTICE. What's so wrong with letting a kid with his talent play when your team has a 39 point lead, and you know he'll see more minutes as a freshman???

 

Jefferson and Hill did the same thing when they were 8th graders. Played JV and saw action in blow outs like tonight...but only when they were completely out of hand. Henley is a very smart coach and knows how to develop his players. I see nothing wrong with rewarding a kid who works hard in practice...regardless of age.
