I think you would be suprised who is watching, I know Raceland and Russell are both watching what is going on. I would think Ashland being on the schedule every year is interested in what happens. I would also think that every on in the District is watching to see what happens. This is big talk around the county, people are longing for a winning football team to support. I hope they get it very soon.

I don't really think it's so much that everyone is watching as it is that that is all that is being talked about because there's not much else going on concerning local HS football. I seriously doubt Raceland, Russell, & Ashland are sitting around worrying about who gets the job at GC. I'd say they're more concerned about their own teams. When the time comes they'll still show up & play their typical brand of successful football.

 

I agree with Carson Palmer; the GC kids still have to be receptive to the new coach & his philosophy, & line up & play. Biggest key for the new coach is to change the perception & the attitude that has previously existed. That being said, I do agree that it will still be interesting to see who actually gets the job.

The boys all love him and he is great to work with...downside would be having a son on the team and the flack he might catch from parents.

Anything on combining the two middle school football programs?

 

The last update I had was that this issue is on the desks of the middle school principals. They are supposed to be determining the size and makeup of a committee (number of parents, coaches, etc.) to represent each school and work together to come up with a feasibility plan. I thought this was coming back to the BOE at its Feb. meeting.

To me the downside would be that he has no head coaching experience at the varsity level. Greenup needs someone to come in that has alot of experience and knows how to turn a program around. They do not need a first time head coach in there trying to learn on the fly.

I remember him. I still have his cleat marks down my chest. :lol: He would make a great assistant if not a choice for coach.

GC might be smart to look at a home grown product to run their program. Sometimes these fancy resumes just dont pan out. A lot of coaches can talk the talk but do they really know what it is like to coach at a county school?

I think most want an outsider. The previous coach was a homegrown GC athlete with coaching success prior to coming home. It still did not help. I think they are looking for personality as well as coaching style to put up with the pressures of putting up with the parents and the armchair quarterbacks that criticize every decision.

This is an excellent point with regards to where our coaches are from. All the sports programs with the exception of girls basketball and softball are coached by Greenup alumni. All the other sports are happy with the jobs they do, but when a GC alumni was coaching the football team (and he wasn't the first), it wasn't good enough. Where does this "double standard" exude from?

Sounds like the parents need to let the coach do the coaching.

The players has just as much to do with a winning program, as a coach does. Just ask people from West Portsmouth about the 2002 team. West could have played without a coach and done the same! Having success with one team doesn't mean you're a good coach.
