Litsinger was 6'3'', pushing 6'4'', I think. And Grutza played much bigger than he was listed.

 

WRONG! Its LITZINGER and he was 6-2 MAX and thats a fact. And even if Grutza did play bigger than he was listed, he was still listed at 6-2. The 2003 Royals weren't a big team at all.

Actually the one game you mentioned with Vories, CCH went on to make it to Rupp that year. As far as last year's regular season victory, I would still take CCH's postseason victory any day over that. I would rather force my rival to turn their uniforms in, than have it done to me. Highlands does it to CCH in football, CCH does it to Highlands in basketball.

 

This is funny. I would say in the last couple years CovCath has beaten Highlands in the postseason, but the difference is CovCath loses to Holmes in the finals the next day, and Highlands actually wins state in football. But I remember Highlands used to run the table in basketball for some consecutive amount of years. And they actually made it to Rupp each of those years, so its meaningless to beat a team but then lose to another region team the next game.

That sums it up. Maschinot is quick, but he's not a point guard right now. Riedinger is much more of a point, but like Clyde said he needs to put on some weight and get stronger.

 

Its all a matter of perspective. They did what they needed to do against a JV team which is what you want them to do. My point is that you can't say "why doesnt the varsity run the offense like the JV does" when a)the varsity had no PG and b)relatively speaking the Mason varisty D is much better and longer than the JV D.

 

I think the CCH JV gets by with a 2 guard playing PG. I think Connor can be a ballplayer IF he will work on his left hand. He seems to have zero confidence going left. You can get by with that at the JV level - not at the varsity level against a strong defensive team. Brett Riedinger may be the best true PG on the JV team. I know he's been well schooled on how to play the game. He simply needs to get stronger physically.

 

Some see my point as a criticism. Its not. Its an observation from someone who knows how to watch a game and project how it will play at the varsity level. I'd also say you've got a 2 guard doing a solid job at PG even though its not his natural position. It never was his position. He always had Rob Broering run the point when he was coming up through the ranks. Tremendous athlete who CAN be a strong player if he works on his ballhandling. I'm a big fan of all of these boys.

 

Note: the sophomore with a big "upside" is Austin Hudepohl. He's like Maschinot -needs to work on ballhandling. Tremendous athlete. Tireless defender. Battles from horn to horn.

 

I totally agree with what you are saying about Austin. Kinda funny as in grade school he was one of the taller kids. I enjoy watching him improve every game. I disagree though that Broering ran the point in grade school. Robby would run the point some, but coachs have always had Connor run the point. I am curious though, and this is not a knock on Riedinger, as I am a fan of his, but what makes him a better PG than Maschinot? I too am a fan of all of them and have enjoyed watching them all since they were in the 2nd grade. I think with the speed and athleticism of this group, if they continue to work hard, they will continue to beat a lot of good teams in the future

I think the transition from JV to Varsity at the PG position is the most difficult to make and most difficult to project. Defense at the varsity level is so much better and more physical than at the JV level. I have not seen CovCath JV this season so I don't know if either of these 2 could project to a 2 guard down the road.

You should come watch the JV guys play! They are a very exciting team to watch. Maschinot rolled his ankle at the end of the Mason game so he did not get to play but a minute in varisty which would have been his first chance to play with the big boys. Hopefully he will be ready to go against Connor tomorrow. As for comments regarding Brett being the stronger PG, again, I am a fan of both of these guys. I am just trying to figure out then if that is what all the experts on here think, then why do the coaches play Maschinot then so much over Riedinger? As for getting stronger, I am sure Coach L will be having both of them work hard in the weight room. Also, Maschinot will hopefully play this summer as this past one he did not do one basketball activity as he had some health issues after the track season.

Now this is actually funny. Like I said CCH did win the region the 1 time they beat HHS in the semi's, and lost to HHS the other 2 teams.

As far as it being meaninginless...how? There is nothing worst then your career ending to your bitter rival, and HHS seniors have had to deal with that 3 straight years. Their last HS game will be remembered as a loss to CCH...that is pretty tough to swallow.

 

HHS had a nice stretch against CCH during the Lorenzen/Smith Era ( 3 years) and that is it. From like 91-96' I think CCH was something like 8-0 against the Birds. Then when Smith and Lorenzen left, CCH went like 6-2 against them over the next the next 6 years. And then the last 3 years, CCH has eliminated them and ended many seniors careers. CCH owns this rivalry.
