Enjoyed beating you in your house and as far as the tournament goes, you all went one more game than the Birds and lost more meaningfull games.

 

I was just pointing out the way those victories went down. I wasnt trying to depress CCH fans so relax.

 

But lets get back to the thread at hand.

 

Actually the one game you mentioned with Vories, CCH went on to make it to Rupp that year. As far as last year's regular season victory, I would still take CCH's postseason victory any day over that. I would rather force my rival to turn their uniforms in, than have it done to me. Highlands does it to CCH in football, CCH does it to Highlands in basketball.

Too early to tell. It will be long while they're waiting for Shover to get back to full health. From what I saw last night a few boys need an attitude adjustment and a lesson is respect. I hope the team leader(s) handle or it we'll have a repeat of some of last year's bunch.

 

 

I believe you're referring to the way a couple of boys act when they are replaced in the game, and to that I agree. Last year it was pitiful to watch the lack of respect some of the boys had for Coach L. I was hoping it would get in check and from what I saw last night, there are still a few who don't take kindly to being removed from the game. Hopefully the leaders will take control of the issue. If not it will only get worse as shown last year.

 

I'd also like to say, in the two games I've seen the JV play, I have been impressed with a few players. Robinson and Connely look pretty good. Hudepohl REALLY impressed me against Mason Co. The little blonde kid [i'm sorry I don't know his name] really impresses me. I actually at times would put him over Pauly..and Schulte was impressive in the two games I've seen as well.

Shover would not have changed the outcome. He would help, but not near enough to make this a game.

 

He averaged over 11 points a game last season as a junior; safe to assume he could post something higher this year, when healthly. Also, takes very good care of the ball and controls the offense. If so, your are down to a three possession game......

So you think Shover can guard the likes of Ricardo Johnson, Vee Sanford, Chad Jackson, Ge'Lawn Guyn, Cox from Ballard, Mornoes/Ashford from Bryan Station, Cosby from J'town, the Elliot Co trio, and Stenzel from GRC? I could go on and on naming other guards but you get the point. Shover is a good guard but not as good as you're making him out to be. Don't get me wrong, I love your enthusiasm for Shover, and he's a great kid that's really going through some tough things right now, but honestly he wouldn't have made that big of a difference in this game. CCH looked absolutely horrible and one player wasn't going to be enough of a difference last night to keep it under a 20 point game.

 

From what I have been told, he did a respectable job on Vee Sanford in both scrimmages this summer and a decent job on Ricardo Johnson in the summer AAU tournaments. The Elliott Co trio lost by double digits last year to CCH in the Lex Cath Christmas Tourney in which Shover put up 21 against "The Faulkners".

I think Shover is a good guard, VERY obviously the best CCH has. And it hurts like heck not having him. His health is obviously much more important to everyone however. And to be honest, even with him back, we would not have had a healthy Mitch. This game wasn't going to be close anyway shape or how. Mason Co. was better, thats it.

I agree. They need a PG, but I was pretty surprised with the way Austin Hudepohl played. He's definitely developed from last year. Andrew Schult also surprised me by how big he was.

 

Were you at the Mason or Lex Cath JV game? You do not think they have a PG in #4 - Maschinot? Just curious what more you would expect him to do as PG

Easy question to answer. Most if not all JV teams play OK defense - not great defense.

 

This current JV team plays well together but they're not strong at ballhandling. They're getting by on athleticism. Still need to find a true PG.

 

So whenever a team scores points on fast breaks, hits open shots, makes good passes ro open men, has more assists then turnovers, runs the floor every play, attacks the basket, it is because they are playing a team that does not play good defense, not because they are a good offensive team?

 

Also, were you at the Mason or Lex Cath game? You do not think they had solid PG play in those games?

Its all a matter of perspective. They did what they needed to do against a JV team which is what you want them to do. My point is that you can't say "why doesnt the varsity run the offense like the JV does" when a)the varsity had no PG and b)relatively speaking the Mason varisty D is much better and longer than the JV D.

 

I think the CCH JV gets by with a 2 guard playing PG. I think Connor can be a ballplayer IF he will work on his left hand. He seems to have zero confidence going left. You can get by with that at the JV level - not at the varsity level against a strong defensive team. Brett Riedinger may be the best true PG on the JV team. I know he's been well schooled on how to play the game. He simply needs to get stronger physically.

 

Some see my point as a criticism. Its not. Its an observation from someone who knows how to watch a game and project how it will play at the varsity level. I'd also say you've got a 2 guard doing a solid job at PG even though its not his natural position. It never was his position. He always had Rob Broering run the point when he was coming up through the ranks. Tremendous athlete who CAN be a strong player if he works on his ballhandling. I'm a big fan of all of these boys.

 

Note: the sophomore with a big "upside" is Austin Hudepohl. He's like Maschinot -needs to work on ballhandling. Tremendous athlete. Tireless defender. Battles from horn to horn.

Ok then. It's a FEW seniors and "leaders" that need the attitude adjustments. Anyone who was at the game knows the few that I'm talking about and 3 of them are seniors with the other being a junior starter....

IMO CCH fans should look at about the 1st of Feb as the time when we can get a clear read on this team. So many new and changing pieces right now. Wait for Mitch to get fully recovered and back in playing shape and see how the rotation shapes up.

That sums it up. Maschinot is quick, but he's not a point guard right now. Riedinger is much more of a point, but like Clyde said he needs to put on some weight and get stronger.

Some of the Mason County players have grown. Downing and Pawsat are each about 6'2", maybe 6'3" in basketball shoes with a generous tape measure. Russ is close to 6'4", Barner and Setty are legitimate 6'5" or 6'6".

 

Not the biggest lineup in the world, but not pipsqueaks either. As I recall, Mason County's 2003 state championship team had no starters over 6'2" or so.

 

Downing is at least 6-3. And saying that Middleton is 6-4 is very generous. Setty is close to 6-7 too.
