I think it did live up to the hype. Even though the score was a little lopsided, it was a heckuva battle for most of the game. I think it proves though that you need a balanced attack to win at this stage of the playoffs.

I am not from Belfry but they beat Central just a few weeks ago by a similiar margin.

Belfry and JC are mirror images of each other. Both have strong running games but are weak at passing and defending the pass.

Hey I totally agree that the best offense is a balanced attack of passing and running. I didn't see the game tonight, but I know in the past Coach Matney has used several different offensive sets to try to compensate for no passing game. Did he do that tonight?

Yes about ever team before the 1993 season was a run type team and won at the 4A 3A level. When a run only type team has a great defense it can win and win big. If JC defense would have come up with a fumble or interception at the right time that run type offense team would have maybe come up with a win.

In case you haven't noticed, football has changed quite a bit in the state the past 15 years.

ON a side note I hope the Highland faithful could see that Ian Welch should be first team all state with the way he covered Collinsworth all night who had very good speed and probably the best route runner I have seen in high school.

 

I don't know if this is the case or not with coach Mueller tonight, but I have seen coaches use their best receiver as a defensive weapon, taking the oppositions best defender totally out of the game by running him away from the play when the defense is in man-to-man.

 

Going into tonight, I thought this might happen. Welch is obviously a star, but he could not single handedly cover 2-3-4-5 very good receivers. Collinsworth may have been the MVP without catching a pass, by taking Welch out of the game.

I can't argue. Something else I was impressed with was your QB's poise. Highlands had at least two huge broken pass plays , one for a touchdown the other was a screan play that was busted to the left, he scrambled and then threw right back to the left with the screen still set up. That was a wierd play. I don't see how that happened without a lineman being down field.

They did not play man but about three plays. Mostly cover three, the first and second long td passes in the second half they were in Cover 3 and the safety bit up on the frontside with the qb hitting backside switch routes.

I was just making a guess since I didn't see it. I know they did this to Couch when he played at Highlands. Whoever he lined up over, just took off for the endzone, running Tim to death.
