Elliott County has earned respect over the past 2-3 seasons and will stayed ranked throughout the year, but the good thing about these kids is that it doesn't matter to them. They will go out and play every team tough from start to finish because it is a competition and they refuse to not play hard. The respect from down state is not important to them. Competing and winning is. That is why they have been successful at every grade and age level of their careers.

The foul situation was the way is was early because Elliott was taking the ball at Clark and the Cardinals were not. Those were fouls(hacks and holds), but I do agree that refs called too many charges in all 4 games, must be some type of point of emphasis.

Ethan Faulkner the point guard who scored 28 pts. on 14-14 FT shooting is headed to NKU.

Well, the Cards sure do have room for improvement , and will be a solid team by mid season. The early foul calls were mostly deserved. The Cards looked a little rusty. For those of you that don't like Elliott your probably going to like them even less before this year is over . They are the real deal, and they will be deep into the state finals (barring injuries) before its over.They play very well together and are a joy to watch.

Even though the game was a scrimmage, I'd still say this is a good indication that EC is the real deal.

 

As for GRC, don't lose too much sleep over a preseason loss. South Laurel lost to Holmes in a scrimmage very close to the regular season by around 25 points in 2005 (with ALL of their players), and all they proceeded to do was go on and win the state title that year.

 

Both teams will get better and progress throughout the season.

After they lost to Cov Cath in 5/3, then Rose Hill and then Mason Co, all they heard was that they could beat up on the bad/average teams, but would struggle against teams that were physical.

 

They beat Rose Hill in Morehead, they were right there with the Royals in the 1st round of the tournament. I think even with that, they will still have to prove themselves all over again. The good thing about basketball is that it's decided on the court, with that said, I still think Elliott needs a favorable draw in March to get to Saturday. Keep the 11th region far, far away, you get to Saturday, we all know anything can happen.

I think the "problem" with Elliot County is they are the type of team you will cheer for when they play someone else besides your team. Everyone loves an underdog, just not when they are beating us! If the boys from Clark County aren't playing them I could cheer for this team.:ylsuper:

If GRC can't cut down the nets at Rupp, I would feel good about Elliot winning it all!

Additional thought

Elliott had 3/4 of Rupp Arena on their side after the 3rd quarter against Mason County last season. All the neurtral fans seemed to fall in love with Elliott during that game.

Had EC beaten Mason Co last year, I really think we would have saw them and Holmes in the finals.

Elliott County is an inspiration to every small rural school in Kentucky. If you start young, work your tail off, play AAU all summer to gain compitition, play together,and can shoot the ball, you can play with the big boys. They are my favorite team in many years, I'm pulling for them to win it all. It's about time you know for another Edmonson County to keep the class thing quiet. If they are making jump shots, they can beat anyone in the state.

The Faulkners played relentless D all night causing a large amount of turnovers, and all the Elliott players bulked up from last year which is going to make the even tougher. The only thing that might hurt Elliott, the Faulkners especially, is a tight referee because they always have one if not two hands on the ball handler.

 

Timmy Knipp looked a lot better this year. He was not picking up silly fouls and took it to the basket hard. The dunk he had over Stenzel, not Zollo, was one of the best I have seen in high school in a LONG time.

 

Zollo had about 11 points when I left with about 4 minutes to go not sure what he finished up with though. I think he a good player, but with the up tempo pace he was not really able to get into the flow of the game. Kind of how Patterson was a nonfactor against VMI. I want to see him play against another true post player before I make a decision on how good he is.

 

GRC has some good athletes and will be a force to be reckoned with when it comes tournament time.

Stenzel got a couple early fouls Hatton played very well.

What were the statistics for Hatton and Stenzel? total points,turnovers,assists,rebounds,and shooting percentages.

HOMELESS CAMEL--Think you are right. After losing to CovCath, Rose Hill, and then creamed at the Mason Fieldhouse the verdict was out and they were pronouned dead and gone. The climb back has included RH in the SF of the region, Mason in Rupp, and now GRC in pre-season. Quality play against Madisonville, South Charleston, and the Myrtle Beach tourney will continue their climb back and win more back in their corner. Draw is critical for them, but also for everyone including regions 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11. All these regions including the 16th would love a draw with 1, 8, and 12 in their quarter bracket. Then something like 3, 13, 14, and 15 in the other half of their bracket.

 

Some just flat out don't like them and I guess you can't please everyone. But, I for one know they are getting tons more respect now than after that Mason lose in the Fieldhouse last year. More added respect & rankings comes more pressure and expectations. I really don't think it will effect the kids too much because they don't pay that much attention to all this and just go out and play no matter who is on the other side. It is very early and I will say we won't have a good picture until the end of January of where everybody is. Lots of things can change between now and then.

This Elliott team reminds me a whole lot of the Breckinridge team that won the title in 1995 (I think). They don't appear particularly athletic and most would take a look at them and write them off. Then, they come out and play the game the way it should be played and the next thing you know, they're cutting the nets down. The piece they've lacked the last 2 years was depth off the bench and a stong post player. With the physical development of Knipp, this team is much more complete.
