Playoff Factoids

Featured Replies

Here's a little factoid (trivia) about this year's playoff teams. Feel free to post your own factoids.

Factoid: Of the 192 teams that made the playoffs, only 94 have a winning record. Here is how it breaks down for each class of 32 teams...

1A - 12 teams

2A - 12 teams

3A - 19 teams

4A - 15 teams

5A - 18 teams

6A - 18 teams

Interesting. Just goes to show maybe they should only take the top two teams from each district. It would beat having 1 seeds beating 4 seeds 50 and 60-0 every year.

Watch and see how many 3 seeds beat 2 seeds though.

I love the idea of the chance for an upset. I think that if a sub 500 team can come into playoffs and run the table, then let em have it. I just think that some of the teams only posting 1 or 2 victories don't belong in there but because of districts being so small in some areas, they automatically make it. I am not a fan of that.

This is a meaningless stat.

With such small districts, you can win your district, lose many of your non district games (because you stepped up and played a tough schedule), have a losing record but easily make a run in the playoffs.

If you're looking for a solution to get only teams with winning records in the playoffs (which there isn't really a good one), make bigger districts and make most of the regular season games district games. Or MAKE teams play other teams WITHIN their region, then use regional record as a wildcard type system.

There's lots of ways to do this, and until a team plays more than 3 or 4 'meaningful' games (which are their district games), that team's overall record is meaningless.

Not necessarily teams with winning records, just teams that have done something to deserve bring there.

Basketball and baseball take all.....why is that OK?

Because it takes a week between football games. Middle of Dec. is too long.

What's your opinion on small-class teams that can't get anyone their own size to play them and are forced to schedule "upper-class" teams to fill out their schedule?

Good point JS. Unfortunately it happens more than some might think. And with the fuel costs, schools are reluctant to travel very far.

Have to agree with JS, pnthr4life and 3wishes.

A lot of good districts produce 3 excellent teams while some produce only 1 or none. Under the above proposal, you do not solve a lot. If you take the top 2, you are still going to end up with some bad teams. (i.e. Harlan won 3 games and is hosting a playoff game. Fairview lost 2 and travels to Campbellsville. Harlan is still in and Fairview is gone with the top 2 argument. This shoves away a team that had some big wins and keeps a rebuilding team that beat weak teams.)

The 2 and 3 seeds are usually very good games.

Many small schools do have to play what is in their area (aka "big schools") or travel a large ammount of miles.

I'll add a tried and true factoid, also, while I am here:

50% of all teams that play this weekend will lose and 50% will win. Write it down!:D

I don't think that makes any difference. WHat matters is your district play. You shouldn't make the playoffs without winning any district games.

It's hard to get interested in the first couple of weeks.

Can anybody produce any numbers on how many #4's have beat #1's in the first round in recent play?
