Can anybody produce any numbers on how many #4's have beat #1's in the first round in recent play?

This is a meaningless stat.

With such small districts, you can win your district, lose many of your non district games (because you stepped up and played a tough schedule), have a losing record but easily make a run in the playoffs.

If you're looking for a solution to get only teams with winning records in the playoffs (which there isn't really a good one), make bigger districts and make most of the regular season games district games. Or MAKE teams play other teams WITHIN their region, then use regional record as a wildcard type system.

There's lots of ways to do this, and until a team plays more than 3 or 4 'meaningful' games (which are their district games), that team's overall record is meaningless.

 

Owensboro Catholic is a good example of your point. I haven't followed them this season as much, but last year they played Reitz (IN 5A Champ), Apollo, Daviess Co., Owensboro, Madisionville & Warren East. Their record was 5-5 put could have easily been better with a weaker schedule. If were not for having to meet Ft. Campbell in round 2 who knows how far they might have gone.

It's hard to get interested in the first couple of weeks.

 

There will be some VERY good 2 vs 3 games. There will be several blowouts but so what. If you knock it to 2 teams it just shortens the season 1 week.

There use to be 11 game seasons in hs football and far fewer teams made the playoffs each year. It seems there was always controversy about teams that narrowly missed the playoffs each season. Isn't this shortened season and an expanded playoff field more or less an 11th game and a chance for their to be no excuses for teams that didn't make the playoffs?

It's fine the way it is. The only thing I would do is try to make each didtrict have at least 5 teams if at all possible. That way you must win one district game to get in.

Pigman now that would be a good idea. 5 teams in each district! I agree there and in 5A district 1 next year Madisonville drops down from 6A to make the 5th team in our district.

Because it takes a week between football games. Middle of Dec. is too long.

 

Also football is a violent sport so why risk losing players to injuries in games that are meaningless.

Perhaps we suggest to the NFL that the AFC and NFC champions have to beat the Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit Lions in a playoff game before they go to the Super Bowl.

Wild card teams still have to be competitive.My point is because of the nature of the game it is not practical for it to be all inclusive.Playoffs should only include say the top two teams in a district or perhaps the top four teams in the region.There is nothing sadder than watching an 0-10 team getting blown out while the 6 or 8 fans "parents" who have an obligation to watch this disaster sit praying for it to end;except maybe a championship game ruined because one teams leading reciever or starting quarterback is on the sideline with an injury that occured during that game

Again Somerset went to the semi's as a four seed. It doesn't happen very often. Just look at our game many people are picking Dayton to upset us. I won't disagree with you on the 0-10 teams though. They should have to at least won one district game to get in. Heck when I played only the district champ went, which left us at 9-1 sitting at home with our only loss to the undeafeted state champs.
