Don Miller at Western Hills. Has almost 100% the same starters as the team that went 1-9 last year...they're 5-3 this year and have been competitive with a pretty solid schedule, including wins over 4A Franklin County and 5A Grant County. Has the opportunity to impress even more if they can come up with a quality upset win or two in their final two games against 6A Lafayette and 5A Anderson County....

Not only did Coach French get the players to buy into his system. He also got the entire Rebel Nation to come on board. Anyone who is active in any program will agree that the hardest part can be getting the adults to buy in.French has been successful every where he has coached. Who would expect anything different here at Boyle. I am one parent that is very proud my son has Coach Larry French as his role model.:thumb:

 

I agree with you ,according to the KHSAA site he won 63% of his games at Meade County in the 90's and 64% of his games at Lincoln.Does anyone know what area coach was State Coach of the Year in 2005?

Larry French @ Boyle County. He came into Boyle this year and completely got his players to buy into his system. We've beaten every team that we lost to last season, but more importantly, he took alot of kids walking the halls of BCHS and got them back onto the field and playing in unity. Great Job coach French!

 

French has done a great job of uniting the Boyle community that had become somewhat frazzled. Winning always cures most ills. The Rebels also have not played anywhere near the calibar of teams that Boyle had to face in 2007. The 2007 schedule was just insane!

Have to put a plug in for Glaser. Undefeated, nationally ranked as high as #2. Only had three starters back on offense and replaced a lot of the defense as well. Despite his tremendous record at X, he has never won a coach of the year award, which I find remarkable.

 

 

Coach Glaser is who I thought of immediately. Not to take anything away from any other coach (ESPECIALLY Coach Beatty ), but he really has had a great year, and done a great job in what could have been a "rebuilding" year for X.

I like to see turnarounds, especially those accomplished against solid competition.

 

Here's my top 5 (not in any order):

Billy Martin, North Oldham - probably deserved the award last year, when he turned the team around from 0-10 in 2006 to 8-4 in 2007. But still deserving of kudos as he has kept the upward movement going; North is 8-0 going into this week's game with Bullitt Central. The next win will make this team the school's winningest team ever (OK, OK, the school's only been open since 2003...)

 

Matt Brown, Oldham County - The Colonels have won 5 straight and are 6-2 in Brown's first year at the school. Only losses to two ranked 6A teams (St. X and Madison Central). Beat 6A ranked Scott County. The Colonels hadn't had a winning record in at least three or four years prior to Matt's arrival.

 

Jim Black, Whitley County - 1-9 in 2007; 7-1 this year. 'nuff said. Wow.

 

Eric Graves, Adair County - This team went 0-10 in 2007, Eric Graves arrived as head coach this year... they lost their first three, but to powers Monroe Co., Butler County, and Russellville...they've won 3 of 4 since, and should have a good chance to win their last two to finish 5-4...

Boyle finished 2007 strong by going 5-2 in their last 7 and setting the table for their success this year.

Preseason I thought Boyle would probably win all but Lex Cath and maybe Mercer Co. Boyle was a very junior dominated team in 2007. In 2007 BG, Henry Clay, Lafayette, and Lex Cath were all more talented and better than Boyle. Danville was really the only head scratching loss, but that is a huge rivalry game.

I agree! Coach French definitely deserves to be in the mix! There's undoubtedly others that would meet my criteria...I just mentioned the ones I was aware of...

They also lost to Mercer.I forgot about Boyle winning 5 out of their last 7 last year.I think the coach at North Oldham has to be in the running because 2 years ago he didn't win a game and now they are undefeated. Talk about turning it around. I bet those fans that are saying great things about him this year were calling for his head 2 years ago.Since noone answered my earlier question about who was the state coach of the year in 2005 I'll tell you that this year at a different school he has only won 1 game this and will probably finish 1-9 this year.It just goes to show you that it's mostly about having the Jimmy's and the Joe's.I saw where 1 year French won 1 game at Meade County and the next year I think he won 8.

Actually, nobody was complaining much at North Oldham two years ago. 0-10 was the worst record in school history - but the school's only been open since 2003, and they had only won 7 total games in the first three seasons. And it was Billy's first season... the North records:

 

2003 3-8 Coach Beno Chappell lost to Russell in round 1 of the playoffs, 21-7

2007 8-4 Coach Billy Martin District R-U, lost to Henry Co. in 2nd round of playoffs Defeated opponent with a winning record for the first time.

 

2008 8-0 YTD Coach Billy Martin Increased roster from about 40 to 60. District Champs Won first game over a ranked opponent. Remaining games vs. 6A Bullitt Central and Ky Country Day.
