Colin Powell endorses Obama

Featured Replies

I didn't make any assumptions. If you'll re-read the posts and the sequence of them, you'll see I merely stated that the rightous indignation displayed by scooterbob could have been avoided if he'd have fully explained himself.

I didn't need to re-read them as I read them carefully the first time, but at your request I did. My thoughts remain the same.

I apologize for bringing race into this thread, but at this time I will agree with Rush. Powell's endorsement of Obama is nothing but race. I can't give the exact quote by Rush but it goes something like this...Research how many inexperienced liberal "white" candidates Powell has endorsed in the past and you will see race start creeping in.

Powell claims to have been a friend of McCain's for 25 years and highly respected him. He's just getting to know Obama and turns his back on McCain????

Again, I'm sorry, but this sounds like a race endorsement to me.

Are you going to say the same thing about the other former Secretaries of State that back Senator McCain. They are backing him because he is white?

I'm sorry, nWo, but I think SKINPIG may be right about this. His point about Powell claiming to have been a friend of McCain's for 25 years and endorsing Obama when he really doesn't know him that well or that much about him doesn't pass the smell test for me.

It is absolutely amazing to me that people can complain that the Obama Campaign is playing the race card but when a prominent black official decides to back his bid for the presidency they say it is because of race. As I've said before this election has really opened my eyes.

When polls show that up to 95% if African-Americans intend to vote for Barack Obama, it is difficult not to suspect that race is a factor in those voters' minds and Powell is no exception. If 90 to 95% of white Americans were supporting John McCain what would liberals be saying?

I agree. According to some, Powell was well respected, even presidential material BEFORE he endorsed Obama. Now, "Obama can have him." He is useless and unworthy.

How many traditionally vote democrat? Over 90%, I believe.

How many non African-Americans traditionally vote democrat? If that number is down this year, am I simply to believe that it is race related, too? Or should we examine more than just the shade of skin of the person pulling the lever?

That is my point. Voters should examine more than the candidate's skin color before pulling the lever. That is true of black, white, and voters of all colors. African-Americans will turn out in record numbers in this election to vote for a black presidential candidate and they may break the record 94% support that LBJ received.

Non-African-American voters appear to be much more willing to look beyond a candidate's skin color than African-Americans when they pull the lever.

John Kerry received 88 percent of the African-American vote and their voting record in other recent presidential elections is shown below. An increase from 88 percent to 95 percent paired with record turnout and widespread voter fraud in heavily African-American neighborhoods that have been targeted by ACORN will be a huge factor in a close election.

Powell is a moderate Republican. Just because he believes abortion should be legal doesn't automatically make him a "liberal" on social issues.

You will have a hard time convincing any "conservatives" on this board that.

In all honesty if you really think about it believing abortion is legal is the true conservative (liberal in the rest of the world) viewpoint.

No it is not the true conservative viewpoint. Conservatives believe in individual freedom and we generally believe that life begins at conception and that all living Americans should be afforded the protections of the US Constitution. It is ridiculous to say that the pro-life position is not a conservative one.
Are you going to say the same thing about the other former Secretaries of State that back Senator McCain. They are backing him because he is white?

I understand your point and its a valid one if a liberal and white former Secretary of State who had served under several liberal Democratic presidents and had been a friend of Obama for 25 years decided to back the more conservative McCain for little quantitative reasons. Honestly, wouldn't you feel that race factored into the decision if that was the situation currently?

If we are going to subscribe to a theory advanced on here that says its okay to assume race figures into a voting decision when the voter does not fully explain why they are voting for or against someone, then isn't it fair to wonder why an African American conservative who 1. was a member of the current Republican President's inner circle as well as former Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush, 2. calls himself a close friend of the Caucasian candidate for 25 years, and 3. presumably because of his back ground places a heavy emphasis on military and foreign policy matters, then endorses the much more liberal African American candidate that has zero military experience and next to none foreign policy experience because and I quote: "because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America."

If race isn't a factor in Powell's endorsement as proferred in his defense, can one then legitimately wonder: a. whether Powell ever was a true conservative; b. if he was not a true conservative at the time, whether he sold out his true more liberal values to take positions under the conservative Presidencies of Reagan, W. and H.W. simply for his personal benefit and ego; c. whether Powell has had an epiphany of sorts and is no longer a conservative but rather has adopted the liberal positions of Obama; d. whether Powell puts more stock in what Obama has said on the stump than the positions he has taken on the issues in the past (which to me do not indicate any meaningful attempt to be "inclusive" or to reach out to the conservative part of of America but to the contrary have been along the extreme liberal lines of Pelosi and Reid) ; and e. whether Powell is placing oratory skills and the ability to "inspire" ahead of experience in military and foreign policy matters that will be needed to protect our country in these very trying times in our country's history as even Biden seemingly acknowledges?

For the record, I have never been a Powell fan. Never. To me he is the poster child of what is wrong with a lot of the U.S. Army (sorry dog faces). I couldn't care less who he endorses because his opinions mean little to me.

For what its worth, my guess is that his endorsement deals a lot less with race and anything Obama offers than it does with the bitterness he feels towards Bush and Republican leaders because he feels he was duped into supporting the Iraq invasion and his personal reputation resultingly tarnished. But I can understand for the reasons discussed above why some people might think race was the major factor in his endorsement. Again, I do not.

It is ridiculous to think the pro-CHOICE position isn't the "true conservative" viewpoint. True is the word you need to look at, I'm not talking about the pseudo-conservative platform that the religious right has came up with. That platform is quite far from conservatism.

I think Mr. Network hit the nail on the head, this endorsement is as much anti-GOP as it is pro-Obama.

I think race has nothing to do with it.

LN I have a question. I understand you don't particulary like Powell, but wouldn't Bush have been better served having him as Secretary of Defense instead af Rumsfeild. Things seem to be going much better in Iraq since Rumsfeild stepped down.

That the election is over. (Statistically and electorally speaking) :D
