Ok, so it could be that every time I have seen Hunter Jones play he has had off days, but he has never impressed me. Not once. Every game I have seen him play he has had at least two errors, and maybe one solid hit if any. I'm not sure what the hype is? Does he have a lot of off days? [This is not slighting the kid, obviously he must be good or multiple people wouldnt be saying he is lol] I just would like to know.

Well when you are on a 16 year old team in the Midland Indians and you get pulled up to play for the 18 year old Midland Redskins team where virtually every player is going D1 and has been drafted from any round (1-50) I'd say thats a pretty good accomplishment. It says even more when he held is own when played for them too. The could has some talent, no doubt about it.

I don't take your comments as 'slighting' the kid...I have seen several kids who I've heard are big recruits, go 0 for 4 with 2 errors. He might fly out 3 times and K once....the fan sees a terrible hitter...the scout sees a kid get fooled on a strike out and come back unphased, make an adjustment, and hit a fly ball on the same pitch that hangs in the air for 5 seconds. Heck, I've seen Farris and Maile make horrible throws into the outfield...I might say, "that's not very impressive"...a scout might say, "nice reaction, good feet, 70 arm, etc...You walk away wondering what all the hype's about? Scouts don't care too much about the micro statistics....they look at the bigger picture... make up, projection (physical and mental), athleticism, arm strength, bat speed, body, smarts, ability to make pitch by pitch adjustments, is he a college kid, and most of all...signability (ie how little money can we get this kid for)...etc etc...

If you didn't know already, Luke is a rather good student at CovCath. Per his resume from the Kentucky Colonels from last year!

 

Luke is currently a junior at Covington Catholic High School where he carries a 3.25 GPA and is ranked 35th in a class of 138. Luke is a proficient writer as evidenced by awards received for his writing from Mount St. Joseph College and Northern Kentucky University and he is looking forward to continuing his study of Journalism and Broadcasting in college.

 

Now I am sure if the right offer came along....but Luke is headed in the correct direction by attending college first.....

Isler may have out performed Nutini in High School but it was totally the opposite in summer ball. Isler struggled all summer while Nutini did very well for himself against tougher competition.

 

Nutini also projects better in college than Isler. I know this part is irrelevant to the topic but I just thought I'd throw that in there.

Even though he wont get much mention on here, James Jones from Dayton gets a recognition.

I followed the Colonels this summer and have followed your posts. Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder. Isler is the starting first baseman for the Colonels and has started the past two years. I believe both players project very well for college in my opinion. It is tough for those who backed both these guys up because they are two of the best players in NKY.

Basballislife I totally agree with you. Nute has so much upside going toward the college game that I truly think you will see him play somewhere at the D1 level! He has speed, a better than average arm, has great bat control, and he loves playing.

 

I dare to say that one person most seem to forget is Darner. He has a gun for a arm and while he doesn't have the speed of Nutini he is not slow by any means. If Krumps moves him back to RF it will help him get some college offers, as I think that is his natural position!

 

BTW of the three young men mentioned above I would want Darner up at the plate if I were down one in the last inning with two outs and a man on second. For whatever reason the kid just lives for moments like these!

I don't have a chip on my shoulder at all about him. Even theoldguy agrees with me. You really do have me all wrong. I really hope that Isler is able to excel and do well.

 

Now with regards to Isler starting 1st base these past two years. Walt generally plays everybody and tries to get everybody equal exposure. His 1st year with the Colonels he wasn't truly the starting 1st basemen as he shared alot of time with Brad Krohman that year. Zac Adams also would have gotten time to play there too but was out with an injury all summer and could only bat. Isler's 2nd year was where Isler gained the primary role there due to that the Colonels used Krohman as more of a pitcher since he was already in college. DC Craig also got some time there this year. Adams got a little playing time too there but yet again was hampered with an injury for most the year and so didn't get much playing time.

 

Isler just hasn't done that well at the plate the past two seasons from what I've seen. I really hope though that he is able to prove me wrong and hit the crap out of the ball but until then the jury is out on him. Isler is a great kid don't get me wrong at all. Isler has proved himself on the high school level but not with summer ball just yet. He still has a whole year ahead of him to work on things and I hope that they work out for the best for his goals.

I watched the Colonels all summer and Walt definely had starters. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on what we each watched this summer. Nutini and Isler are both excellent players and are receiving interest from many of the same schools. I do disagree that Isler has not proven himself during summer ball, as a lot of the interest he is getting is from his summer season. He hit clean up for a lot of the summer and I know for a fact he was consistantly hitting 87-88 and topped out at 90 on the guns. I agree his best shot in college is pitching. Nutini has great speed as well as a great arm to go with it. I expect great things from both these guys.

I really do hope that is what he is pitching because he can guarantee himself a good education at a fine school and lets be real here, that is what these kids are working for. I think sometimes we get away from that but we need to realize that they aren't professionals here but they are playing and working hard to make a future for themselves and allow them opportunities to be successful in life. And it is even more important now in these troublesome economic times.
