Childhood Games

Featured Replies

Seeing the "duck-duck-goose" CFL touchdown celebration over in the Pro Sports forum got me wondering. Other than organized sports, what were your favorite childhood games?

I can remember playing four-square (box ball); another game that involved a tennis ball and a street curb that we called (very originally, I might add) curb ball. We also played a version of tag at night using flashlights. Sometimes played marbles, but I never was very good. Anyone else? I'm especially interested to see if the favorite games of the BGPers that are in my age range (old fogey) are significantly different than those a generation later. I would assume so with the advent of video gaming, but I am curious to see if that is true or not.

Off the top of my head, if we aren't counting video game stuff, I would say tetherball. I never "got it" as a kid, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it.

Napoleon Dynamite had a few scenes featuring tetherball, funny stuff.

We used to play Red Rover, Red Rover .

Our elementary school playground had a tetherball. I played on the monkey bars and the sliding boards instead.

At school, played a lot of four-square and eight-square, and another cherry ball game called "buns up." At home we played stick baseball with a broomstick, and a ping pong ball wrapped up with athletic tape. Hopscotch with street chalk, that was when I was really young. Played a lot of "Capture the Flag" at scouts, and also a game called "Smear the (blank)" with the football. We played a version of "horse" using bike jumps. I was big into army men and we would have wars where you used a rubber band to shoot down the enemy and got a golf ball roll for a bomb every 10 rounds or so. Your guys would advance based upon the number of enemy you killed. On rainy days, I made up a baseball card game based upon statistics on the back and using bell curve dice principles. The only handheld game I had was Strat-O-Matic baseball. Played a lot of Marco Polo in the pool.

The games that I remember playing a kid were : Red rover, Red rover I dare you over, Frozen Catchers, Hidin' go seek, Tag, Kill the person with ball ( football ).Brings back memories!

I would agree it brings back the memories.

I loved tether ball, 4 square, Red Rover, dodge ball, etc. I also loved a pool game we always played called "Gator."

Jacks

Frozen Catchers

Simon Says

Kick Ball

Wiffle Ball

Ghost in the Graveyard

Kick the Can -- my all time favorite!

All the neighborhood kids out every night till the street light came on. You dont see that in many neighborhoods anymore.

Tag Hide and Go Seek @ Night

Kick Ball

Wiffle Ball

Red Rover

Cops & Robbers

Everything outside of those were just the regular football, basketball, etc..

Oh the good ole days of playing outside until dark - and mom saying "come home when the streetlights come on"... We used to play, kick the can, statues, freeze tag, flashlight tag, whiffle ball, kickball and play with our light sabers - that actually lit up!

Played a lot of Cowboys/Indians, with the gun holsters.

1) GI Joes and action figures, were part of the daily routine.

2) Strat-O-Matic Football.

3) Hockey Game Table, with metal figures you turn.

4) Atari, was "the" video game console.

5) Nerf Baseball - real wooden bat, hit a "Nerf" ball (lot of fun)

6) Rode Bikes, a lot.

7) Bas-Ket a Basketball game, which used a ping pong ball and shot from different places. Lot of fun.

8) Touch Football in the road.

Kickball and whiffleball were definitely popular. Everyone used to see just how much spin they could put on a whiffleball. Also had a pool table with a removable ping pong table top for rainy days.

We had a badminton set, lawn darts ("jarts").

Whoever mentioned the streetlights was right on the money. We were outside ALL DAY except for meals, but the streetlight was the signal to get back home.

Oh this was my favorite. Back in the days before cell phones, cable tv, internet, and video games every kid in the neighborhood played. Kids today are really missing out.
