Wow...what sort of standard are we holding these kids to if that is an ejectable offense? I wasn't there either, but the video gives a pretty clear picture of the play. It looked like LCA might have been trying to run a hurry up offense...the Raceland defender was trying to hold on for a few extra seconds to run the clock...and the LCA receiver jerked his leg away from him in frustration. Unless something happened after the video stopped, this ejection call should be overturned and the LCA player shouldn't have to sit out. When I heard someone got ejected, I pictured the LCA team losing all discipline late in the game! Sorry I made that comment earlier. The video evidence proves otherwise.

A kick is a kick, the rules don't allow an official to determine if the kick wasn't hard or the kick din't have follow through or whatever. The rules have a certain mandate that the official must follow. It's not their job to make exceptions, it's hei job to enforce the rules as the NFHS boof says. PERIOD!!!!

I wasn't going to post anymore on a thread on a game last week but I just wanted to give you an "Atta Boy".

Now, Raceland Plays GCHS this Friday and I am not sure about LCA but last week was just that.

People see penalties on last drives and they automatically think something is up, the officials are calling stuff that they weren't earlier or the refs are not letting us win or whatever. The fact is that win the game is on the line and a team is losing, they do whatever it takes to get the job done and that usually means penalties. Emotions are high and kids want to win. Teams tend to hold twice as much as they have done the entire game. I see many, many football games a year, I would say probably 4 times as many as the average person, and you see this time and time agan. When the game is on the line, penalties go up. That's just the nature of the game. I wasn't at the game but I would guess that most of the calls on the final drives were holds. Am I right?

Official according to who? Unless you have the stats from the KHSAA commissioner's desk,then they're not the "official" version. I'm sure there are several versions floating around via the Lexington Herald Leader & the Daily Independent, Raceland, & LCA. Doesn't matter anyway, because as noted in earlier posts, penalities didn't beat LCA, Raceland did....end of story.

Did the kid deserve to be ejected and penalized on that play? IMO, No. After watching it (and here's the important part) over and over without audio and from a distance it is clear to me the kid nothing wrong.

 

Do I understand why the official interpreted what he saw the way he did? IMO, Yes. The fact that it takes an individual multiple looks to make sure nothing had happened, when the official is not expected, but REQUIRED, to make a call on the field as quickly as possible. This says to me that based on the evidence from watching it once in real time speed, that I could definately see why he made the call he did.

 

Did this call cost LCA the game and win the game for Raceland? IMO, No. It would have certainly helped the Eagle's odds, but who's to say that the QB would throw to a different receiver on the interception? This call did not end the game, it was an inconvenience, but the burden to win was still on LCA and the burden to make a defensive stand was on Raceland.

 

Does the official need to be punished in some form? IMO, Yes (maybe). It was pointed out that this official has made this exact same call before. I only hope that the KHSAA also had to have a discussion with the official after that to address what the "proper" call after video eveidence was. If a simialr instance was pointed out to him and he still amde the exact same call, then yes he needs to be mildly disciplined with a reprimand or not being allowed to call a playoff game. He was just trying to do his job and make a call in a timely manner on a play that required interpreting intent, you can not honestly chastise him and penalize him harshly for this. But, if this is indeed the second time he has made this inaccurate call in hindsight, then it has to stop and thus he needs to be disciplined.

 

That's my take on this.

That call was awful. Period. He was only trying to shake loose from the Raceland player. I hope he gets reinstated, he should not have to sit out a game.

From a reliable source, the LCA kid should be reinstated for this weeks game.

:argue: KHSAA Rule Book: Rule 9-Section 4-Article 3j.--No player or nonplayer shall: Strike an opponent with his fist, ..., nor kick or knee him. PENALTY: Fighting, ..., striking, kicking, or kneeing.--15 yards and disqualification.

While talking with several members of this officiating crew right after the game, the official who threw the flag saw the leg go back towards the Raceland player, thus giving him the impression that he was 'kicking or kicking at' him. He did not see the Raceland player holding the LCA players' foot. Another official who was coming up towards the play, saw the same thing- #18 looking down at the Raceland player and making a 'kicking' motion towards him. He did not see the Raceland player holding #18's foot. Now, on the 'original' clip that was posted on this thread, #57, on Friday night, you could see that the Raceland player did indeed have ahold of the LCA player's foot, and you should have also seen that #18's foot was in fact in the act of going towards the Raceland players head. Thus, by rule, what they saw and what they called, was correct. But, per the conversation that the Referee had with the LCA coach at the time that it happened about the 'holding of the foot', the crew requested to get a copy of the game film and review it.

I spoke with them again on Monday, and they agreed that what they saw [the leg going towards the opponents head] and penalized was the result of the Raceland player holding #18's leg, and just the natural 'motion' of trying to get his foot loose; it was not 'intentional' as it appeared in 'live speed'. It was their decision to contact the KHSAA and ask to have the player's eligibility re-instated for this Friday.

Pretty good piece of officiating by a crew that had already been paid for their job, game was over, but still worked hard on getting the call right!

Thanks for the explanation KSCTU. That is a valid and logical explanation of the event. Like I said before, this officiating crew is one of the very best crews that you could ask to have officiate a game. They are consistent and take their jobs as officials very seriously.

 

I think, after all the facts have been given, several people owe this officiating crew some apologies. They did not have to request a copy of the tape, and they did not have to put the time in, after the game was over, to correct their error, and admit they were wrong, then contact the KHSAA to say the player should be re-instated.

 

And, consider me as one of the people who is glad the young man is going to be eligible to play this week.
