Wireman Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Interesting and sad news out of Clay County: http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/28636194.html He's known in his small town as a reverend, good neighbor, and friend. But federal authorities say behind the scenes, Wayne Reid and his wife Donna were making millions by selling marijuana using several businesses to disguise their operation. Now the Reids, once thought of as pillars in their community, are facing up to 30 years in prison...

Their city (Manchester) slogan is "City of Hope". I always say it's the "City of Dope".
sportsfan41 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Alot of people say that both religious people, and drug users are one in the same; people that need a crutch. I've always thought that was a load. Apparently these folks thought it was an opportunity.
Jumper_Dad Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Sadly, living in a neighboring county to Clay Co, this doesn't surprise me one single bit... Their city (Manchester) slogan is "City of Hope". I always say it's the "City of Dope". Absolutely right.......half of the people I deal with in a neighboring county breaking the law are from Clay County. There are a lot of great people in Clay County and I have several friends at work from there. There is an underlying culture of corruption in that county. Too many people looking for a gravy train. From drugs to organized theft rings Clay County has several issues. I think the news recently reported that Clay County has the lowest per capita income in the country.
Ms Liberty Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 It is so sad to see this happen. Why do people use the drugs and Why to those that are thought to be upstanding people in the town sell? Gets me! ! !
Hasbeen Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 A lot of people defended the recreational use of marijuana recently in this forum. Folks, if it clouds one's judgement enough that a Baptist preacher doesn't think people are going to notice that he suddenly has millions of dollars to throw around developing property, then we truly are losing a generation to drugs. What this man had done will undo the good that dozens of honest, caring, pastors have tried to accomplish at a time when people need it most.

They have a very low per capita income, but they actually don't have the lowest in the state. That belongs to Owsley County I believe.

Unfortunatley, this seems to be the trend in several of our counties across our great commonwealth. It is a sad situation.
oldrambler Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 This is a terrible situation....most of all like another poster has stated for other pastors in the area to try and rebuild lost faith in them as a whole. Unfortunately people take a story like this then stereotype pastors, christians and church goers all over when nothing could be further from the truth. I realize that his is a very poor area of the state and country for that matter but imo does not excuse this type of behavior from anyone in any way. Cvillecat stated that unfotunately this is going on everywhere and he is right. This area (Clay Co.) and the EKY region is certainly not alone in corruption.
Wireman Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Its sad to think of how this man used and abused his stature in society to front such an operation. I can't imagine how the people that attend that church must feel.
