September 16, 200818 yr If there was an 8 team playoff system, I truly believe that USC would have probably won 5 of the last 6 National Champions and who knows maybe even 6 of the last 7 if you go back to Palmers senior year there in 2002. When it comes to big games under Carroll, these guys really just rarely lose, and actually seem to win by a good margin over other good teams. This is why I think we need a playoff system to, cause I really don't believe we are truly crowning a true National Champion right now. Just take even last year LSU a two lost team won it all, but why did they deserve to be in that title game more than any other really good two lost team? It just came down to opinions of people and not truly who was the best. I don't think that LSU team last year would have won it all, say if they played USC in that title game who also was a very good 2 lost team. The system we have in place definitely does not work at all, in crowning a true champion. Every year there are teams just as good, that are just as deserving to get the chance to play for the title. I know even with 8 teams, there would still be some teams not happy. However it would definitely help in crowning a true champion, and let us see who probably really was the best team that year.
September 16, 200818 yr Author I know we talk about this stuff every year. However the main reason I wanted to bring it up, was because when I got to thinking about it. I really do believe USC would have won the title a lot over the last 6 or 7 years.
September 16, 200818 yr Well the prevailing opinion on here would probably be that if there were a playoff system, an SEC school would win almost the entire time. I'd say in the past little bit it would have been an SEC school or USC. In 2003 you'd have USC or LSU. In 2004 USC or Auburn. In '05 Texas and USC (which I'm assuming is the one you were removing). In 2006 it could possibly have been Florida, USC, or LSU. In '07 Georgia, LSU, or USC. I think you'd have a tough time selling that USC would have won each of those tossups, and I can definitely say I don't believe they win in 2002 against either Miami or Ohio State.
September 16, 200818 yr I realize what you are saying but I think that the best that we can hope for is a "plus one" system. I think that we will see that and nothing else. I guess in a way the entirel season is a playoff, Ohio State lost it's playoff game with USC on Saturday. They can still get a BCS bowl by winning the Big10 but the NC game imo is gone.

September 16, 200818 yr IMO I like the system to a certain point. The system at hand makes every game you play another step closer or farther to a chance at a championship. This also builds on the toughness of your schedule, so these teams not playing anyone in high rankings but winning every game doesnt get a walk into the championship( like I believe it would of been Hawaii last year.) I dont like this system because teams don't have a chance to prove they can beat the team they are being compared to on paper and points. If you make a 8 team championship then out of the past several years there would of been several SEC teams in it. I'm not saying that USC couldn't of did it but in a playoff system they would have to beat a Florida team, then possibly a Georgia team then a team like LSU or Ohio State caliber in the Championship. IMO this would actually help SEC in the long run.
September 16, 200818 yr The two teams that get to the National Championship every year are usually almost always the two best consistent teams for just that year. USC does usually prevail in big games but if they can't win in the "non" big games then they will never deserve to be in the National Championship game without the playoff system. I don't agree that USC would have won 6 or the last 7, with the playoff system, and that's because of the SEC has been so darn tough.

If you think back to 2002, which team was arguably playing the best to end the year, it was USC. They had a great offense that was clicking on all cylinders to end the year and had the best QB in the nation. They had a very good defense led by Troy Pamalou, and wasn't just beating teams to end the year, they seemed to be just destroying everyone. Including a great Iowa team in the Rose bowl.

A great Iowa team? You are really stretching for this 2002 thing. Miami and OSU were easily the two best teams. Could USC have won? Sure. However, they weren't on the same level as either of those teams.
September 16, 200818 yr If there was an 8 team playoff system, I truly believe that USC would have probably won 5 of the last 6 National Champions...Wouldn't that be exciting:rolleyes:.... The current system plays a large part in what makes college football so interesting and hopeful to all the fans. Personally I wouldn't mind the plus one system but I think to make this sport a carbon copy of all other sports would kill a great deal of its interest.

I agree 100%, I have always said there needs to be a playoff put in place as well. I-AA has had great success with the playoff system for years. Unfortunately, as long as there are Bowl Games and the amount of money involved we will won't see it happen. The NCAA caeres more about money than they do finding a true National Champion.

Personally I wouldn't mind the plus one system but I think to make this sport a carbon copy of all other sports would kill a great deal of its interest. See this is what I don't get. People say they don't want a playoff because it will take away some from the season, because right now every game means everything. However I do not buy it one bit. 8 teams is not that many teams at all, if you compare it to how many D1 schools there are. Every single game still means everything, I mean one lost still could keep you out of the playoffs. So every single game you are playing for your playoff life still. So the season would not lose any interest at all. You say it would be a carbon copy of all the other sports, but how? College baseball you have all kinds of teams make it. College basketball you have 64 teams make it. So yeah that could water their seasons down a little bit. However in college football you can't have a playoff system that last long. It probably would have to be just around 8 teams. So you would have every single D1 program fighting for one of 8 spots to get into the playoffs. That definitely would not make the season lose any excitement at all, because still just one lost could keep you out. However now we would have a better chance at crowning a TRUE national champion, instead of just taking a guess at who we think MIGHT be the two best teams and have them play in the title game.

So the season would not lose any interest at all. Let's be honest, there are at most 30 teams (that's being very generous), who have a shot at the national title every year. 30 teams fighting for 2 spots to play for it all is much more exciting than let's say, 40 teams fighting for 8 spots to get in the playoff. I would love to see a playoff system as well, but you if would absolutely take away from the regular season drama that we see right now.

However, they weren't on the same level as either of those teams. That Iowa team was a really good team that year. As for them two easily being the two best teams, I would have to disagree with the easily part. OSU that year if I remember were called the luckeyes? Because of all the close games they barely pulled off. If they were easily one of the two best teams, then you would think they wouldn't have barely pulled off those wins like they did. Especially considering that they didn't even play the other best team in the Big 10 that year in Iowa. So I definitely do agree that they were easily one of the top 2 teams that year. However they got the chance to play in that title game, and when given a chance anything can happen and that is what happened. They were able to upset that great Miami team. If there was a playoff system that year, I not even sure if that OSU team gets to that title game. Now Miami that was a GREAT team, and USC might not have beat them. If there was a playoff system though that year though. I bet USC and Miami would have been the ones in the title game if they were on opposite sides of bracket.

Right now it causes drama if you lose one game, cause might not be able to make title game, however if you lose one game even with playoff system, then you still might not make it. Trust me there would be plenty of drama to see which 8 teams make the playoffs. Also now with there being a lot more parity in college football. We are not usually going to see anymore just two clear cut teams go undefeated. Everyone usually slips up once among the way. So you like how we then just really take a guess at who we think MIGHT be the two best teams? Just think about this. We have OSU who just got killed by USC. However they very easily now can win the rest of their games since the Big 10 is so weak, and if that happens with the system the way it is. They still might just slip into the Title game. They will slowly start to move ahead of teams who end up getting their first losses. I dont know what you think, but OSU is definitely not one of the two best teams in the country this year. So not right a team who would be better than them, would not even get a chance to play for the title even though they just have one lost too.
