Harlan County vs. Fleming County Sept. 13

I was shocked by the outcome. I would have never dreamed with that group out there that they would have lost. We need Marcus to take care of that ankle and let it heal. How did Cody and Stephen do?

Cody and Stephen both did good. Cody is going to get better each and every game as he gets that knee off his mind. He is going to be a good one as well as several others as long as they work the sky is the limit. Which brings me to a point that I have been thinking about every since last year. I get on here and see the talk about the Bears with the combo of the three schools. I read all about the coaches and its fun as can be. I listen to the talk and I am one of the main people that has been talking the Bears up. Nothing in the world wrong with that and I think its going great as far as we have traveled BUT at some point and time the players must take it as a challenge to get better. You can have 100 players or 20 players, the best coach or the not so good coach but success is a direct result of the players. What I am saying is that the kids have to set a goal and then set out to achieve the goal. These freshmen that we have could be the District, Regional and even state champs in the next 4 years. The question is do they want to be and do they understand what it would take. My ole coach always told us that W=W. Meaning that work equals wins. True words I still remember today. Football, for the most part, isn't a skilled sport. Anybody that has a desire to be the best they can be can play a big part on a football team. How many of these kids are going to put in the extra work to be more than successful just here in the mountains. I guess I am speaking to those Bears that get on here and read. Success has no short cuts. For example, right down the road I know of a player who has very little God-given ability but he has worked his butt off to be the best he could be and it shows. One of the best backs in mnts. and the state. Those 5:45 am workouts on the field before school, all the road work, eating the iron and all he has done is tremendous. It can and has been done but the question is are we willing to do it. Little Bears there is no time like the present and with work we can do great things. You will have the best facilities, a great coach and all the things you need to be successful. A great opportunity that I hope we will take advantage of. I'm tired!

Harlan lost 20-14. Letcher's freshmen are so big, you would think they were older, but I saw the kids play in middle school last year. Harlan lost arguably their best back in the second quarter, and that really hurt!

Harlan County or the Bears big guy!

Good post Lungbuster!:thumb:

It's time to get to work here in Harlan County. Nothing good ever came easy and all these "little bears" need to get dedicated and take advantage of a wonderful opportunity. These older boys can lead the way. Success breeds success. :ylsuper:

Cody had some good runs. Stephen also had a couple good runs and a 2 point conversion. Hope Marcus get healthy soon.

Letcher County had a very good Freshman team and also BIG. Our Cubs will continue to improve with the help of our great coaching staff and experience on the field.

So...is there any gas in Flemingsburg? If we get there can we get back? IF we get stuck who volunteers for my kids to stay with them? :p

There is gas, although its getting rather pricey.

I was concerned Letcher would win big. They had three or four freshmen making big plays in the varsity game a couple of weeks ago.

Not having McMillian at full strength hurts.

I also agree with Lungbuster about the need for the players to go to work. They can push around other teams in middle school, but it takes serious work and dedication to do that consistently on the high school level.

They need to turn weightlifting into a very serious sport. Getting a strong wrestling program shouldn't hurt either if it keeps a lot of the young men active in the winter.

You're right. Wrestling and football are complementary. The problem with having a wrestling team is finding competition. I cant think of any schools in the area that have wrestling. McCreary Central, Sheldon Clark, and Johnson Central off the top of my head. How many others??

Yes you did.

Fleming asked to move from District 7 to District 6 because, according to the KHSAA responses, "primarily because they already schedule Breathitt, Estill and Powell."

I think Magoffin was in District 6 in the original plan.

Did you read my reply? It may hard to get over on you, but you should know what you are talking about.

Very, very true! I've read numerous posts that put Coach Larkey in such high regard, and I agree with those wholeheartedly because his resume speaks for itself. However, unless the players of this team get the desire to be the best every Friday night, they will come up short. I think the Bears have it in them to be very good, but they have to prove it every time they step onto the field.

Also, I was disappointed to hear about some players being dismissed from the team. I don't want to put the players' names on here, but does anyone know if this is true?

Harlan County or the Bears big guy!

Huh? I'm not sure I know what you are saying.

The weight program is huge and Larkey stresses this as #1 in the offseason. It is up to the kids to stay and put in the hours when no one is watching also. At Rockcastle putting 4 hours of continious work into the lifting program a day paid off, they need to be dedicated and do the same. The weight room wins games. I'm fully satisfied that if players don't take the weight program seriously, they'll have the chance at another sport during the fall because it isn't acceptable.
