Why not like the old days and have 3 high schools. Mckell,Greenup, and Wurland. Or better yet just fix GCHS and be a force in athletics like we should be. All of these maybe unrealistic but you guys started it.

Greenup County's Basketball program has done nothing but gone down hill since 1975, I guess some of you are to young to know that. So why would anyone think that Fraley is going to turn things around?

Oh yeah it was down hill for the 20 years that Ward was at the reigns. Yes '74 was a great year, but how can you discredit the kids and staff that worked to put up all the numbers on those district championship and region championship banners. I agree that GC has been going severely downhill for awhile, but to trash 20 years of accomplishments from 1980-2000 is too much.

I just don't see where anyone has realized how sever the problem is at Greenup county, nor do most have a clue, much less an idea how to fix the problem, It was posted about the 20 years accomplishments at the school, but yet none produced a championship team, Can you give me an answer as to why with all the talent that was wasted there, and in most cases the best sat the bench, Here is a hint, to much politics, and till all this is taken out never will the 74 record be broken, grant you, there have been teams which i feel were better then the 74 team, its because of the leadership that none has equaled that 74 team

I will grant you one thing Basketball74, the 1974 basketball team was special and accomplished more than any other team in GCHS history and noone can take that away. I am in 150% agreement that talent has been wasted and many opprotunities have been blown in the past 20 plus years. Anytime you have teams like 1982-83 and do not capitalize, well, enough said. I honestly don't know the answer, but I do know that parents have to get out of the picture (in all sports) in order for some kind of fix to occur at Greenup. It is embarrassing and it leaves a bad taste in the mouths of us who worked our butts off on the field wearing Green, Black and Gold to continually hear about all the arguing. I will guarrantee the kids wish everyone would hush and let them play.

Yes, the baseball team is having great success right now, and for that I am grateful. The group of boys that they have had for the past few years have been awesome. Hopefully they will continue with their winning ways.

 

As for the football and basketball teams, there has been some turmoil recently. I feel that there are many reasons for this, but I will only touch on a couple of them.

 

Greenup County has always been an agricultural area, and since football and basketball are fall sports, a lot of talented boys can't play because of prior responsibilities to their families. I have heard my dad (Wurtland High class of '73) tell stories of how the football team would spend many practices going from farm to farm helping with the harvest, just so the boys who lived on those farms would be able to play. Such community help is no longer heard of, so those boys are no longer able to play.

 

Another thing that I have noticed is the transfer of a lot of talent out of the county system to other area schools. Is it for academic reasons? That I do not know, but I remember at least 3 starter quality basketball players leaving before my senior year. One to Raceland and 2 to Ashland. All three of them started for their new teams.

 

Last, the feeder system for the football and basketball programs are not what they could be. We have 2 Middle schools that feed into the High School, but as far as Junior league programs, not much is out there. There are a lot of boys who come into the high school program that have no clue of basic fundamentals in their respective sports.

 

I know that there are grumblings of politics and parent interference, but I will not get into that. The things that I have mentioned are just my opinions and things that I have noticed from living in the area most of my life. I wish there was some way to "fix" Greenup, but there is no easy answer. All we can do is cheer our boys on and hope that things will get better. Remember, the players are doing all they can, and hearing the boo-birds in the crowd will do nothing to help the situation.

I have coached for 8 years and have watched GC JFL grow into one of the best JFL programs in the area. The past 3 years we have had record tunrouts. We now have a flag program also with 4 teams. This is a great point. When I played football at McKell (7-8th grade) we beat everyone and there was pride in the blue and white we wore. Our freshman team was pretty good, too. Then we went 2-9, 5-6 and 4-7. I realize at that time we played Ironton, Portsmouth, Ceredo-Kenova, Lexington Bryan Station, Ashland, Boyd Co., Buffalo Wayne, Russell, Johnson Central, Montgomery Co., and Raceland. At that time, it was embarrassing to play Raceland. They were the easiest team on our schedule and we felt we shouldn't play a 1A team. Now, we can't beat them. Why? Basketball at the time, was pretty unbeatable around here, but now it is what it is. Can this all be fixed? Time will tell.

Every parent wants their son to play for a winning program and a winning coach with a reputation of making fine young men and with this in mind an the academic programs Russell and Raceland have to offer is it any wonder GC parents see these 2 schools as viable options to the turmoil of the county school?
