Highlands 8th won the St. Catherine Tourney tonight in an exciting game. They beat the St. Cath/Thomas Tomcolts who are combined 8th graders. 4 of the kids on that team play for the NKY Warriors and are all very good players. 49 to 43 was the final in a packed gym. Gotta love those Catholic school tourneys. Witte came off the bench to drop 12 points and grab 7 rebounds. Collinsworth and Dupont both hit double figures as well. These kids all live in the same 3 mile radius so bragging rights were on the line and the Birds earned them this year. I expect some heated battles next year at the Frosh level when Highlands plays NCC.

 

Next up for Highlands is a very good Summit View team in the Dayton Tournament on Thursday. If they bring the same intensity they had tonight this should be a whale of a game and not lopsided like it was 2 weeks ago.

Summit View travels to Sharp Tuesday night (weather permitting) to take on the Wildcats before opening the Dayton Holiday tourney with Highlands Thursday.

They beat them by 11. I noticed some individualism in that game so Dadof3 has a good point about team play. ***"

 

Hold the phone... Anyone that was at that game know's it wasn't really an 11 point victory... Bad game by Bulls and late Technical is the only reason it was that bad on the scoreboard... That is all I'll say about that... This makes Thursday's game even more hyped against Highlands...

I will agree with you there, didnt mean to make it sound so one sided. It was neck in neck the entire game and yes the Bulls shot themselves in the foot. :thumb:

If you are posting about 7th grade action at Dayton, HMS actually lost to St Joe in a nice game. It was a 2 point spread with 1:26 to go and then St Joe scored the last 8 points to win by 10.

 

St. Joe has a really nice ballclub and can beat some 8th grade clubs.

Having seen both, Summit has the upper hand on defense, offense and coaching. I stick by my comment, head and shoulders, undefeated and NKMSBL Champions. Twenhofel's 3-2 zone will get ate up by their outside shooting and if they go man, Twenhofel has no answer for the penetration.

 

Should have been there last night, it was a completely different team (Highlands) and a lot of fun to watch. Heck, win or lose I really dont care at this level just seeing the things I saw last night was very enjoyable. They were making the extra pass, rejecting shots (collinsworth put one in the 3rd row on a kid trying to shoot a 3), diving for loose balls, boxing out, playing with PASSION. That is all I ask for and that was evident. Like I said, the kids from Summit View seem to do this night in and night out so they have the nod as being the top team for right now. Im hoping for a much better game on Thurs night.

Is there a website that tracks standings? Who is the best 7th and 8th grade teams to date?

Do all of these teams play multiple games on weekend days? It seems like a lot of them play in any and every game and/or tournament offered!

Any results on the Dayton Middle School Tournament? Walton-Verona's 7th defeat St. Mary's 8th "b" team by a convincing margin. I'm not real sure what kind of format this tournament has with 7th and 8th grade teams competing against each other. Woodland, Walton-Verona, Turkeyfoot, Twenhofel and Highlands all have a chance to make this an interesting tournament. I believe Walton plays Dayton in their next game which should be interesting. St. Mary's 7th grade played Villa this afternoon. Any results from this game? I believe Highlands defeated St. Joes in a tight game as well.

That is a little much. I would say the typical 8th grade team in NKY plays around 35 games a year including tournaments. If you throw in AAU on weekends and tourneys you can probably add another 25-30. Total 60 in a season but that includes both school team and AAU.

 

Its the only way you get better is to play, play and play. Sitting around playing once a week wont get it done. It can be a cost to the parents and sometimes an inconvenience but in the end its great for the kids who love it. If I had to add up the amount of games I have been to for my son over the past 4 yrs I probably couldnt even tell you. I know my 2 yr old has been hanging out in gyms her entire life and she is already taking a liking to the sport. : )

I sometimes think we play too much in middle school and don't spend enough time on personal improvement and getting better at our weaknesses. The kids play alot more now than 20 years ago but I don't see an improved finished product. I think Kentucky produced just as many DI players in the

80's as they do now. I also think the teams where just as good.

 

If you think about it, is it harder to reteach a bad habbit or teach it the first time correctly? We can run and dribble and pass better but why can't we shoot it like they could in the past? Too many games, too young, with poor shooting mechanics behind the 3 point line? The fact is, Kentucky has produced fewer NBA players than at any time in our history. Why?

The Catholic schools play in lots of tournaments, already this year St Henry, Campbell County, Highlands St Paul and IHM. There 3 more this months and next month starts a string of 13 Cincy West Side Tournaments with 2 - 5 games each. It is grueling for the adults but the kids love it.
