By the way, who ever the injured player was, I hope it isn't serious. They certainly were being very careful with him.

Birds looked pretty good. I was pleased with our run blocking, particularly in light of the fact we started 3 juniors and a senior in the interior that had very little varsity experience last year (mop up duty only). Knowing the Tigers always play great run defense, I thought we did a pretty good job. Beechwood blitzed a lot and for the most part we did a good job picking them up. But there is certainly work that needs to be done. I saw some things that must be improved, but I'll keep those to myself.

 

Mainello looks thinner than last year. Great frame. I didn't see him do much however last night. Then again, he was going both ways against quality players on both sides of the ball. That won't be the case once the regular season begins I suspect.

 

Teipel is another great athlete. Hits hard on defense and runs the ball pretty well.

 

I like Daniels at qb. Had a couple of nice passes and runs the ball well. Looks like a leader.

 

Roller played well at lber and at tight end. Collinsworth had a couple of nice catches. I don't recall him challenged when he was at corner.

 

Crawford, as Ryan pointed out in his blog, looked good running the ball. Very nice change of pace. Conner is well, simply Conner. Ran the ball well. Guidugli started out throwing the ball high. I assume jitters. He settled down nicely. There were a couple of overthrown long passes that I know he'd like to have back, but they are taught that if you are going to be off target, have it be too deep and not too short where it can be intercepted. Buten had a nice TD reception.

 

D played okay. At times our run D looked a little soft, but that may have had to do with all the substitutions going on. Not having Rosenhagen out there (nursing a minor injury; not a big concern) I'm sure had an effect on our run defense. Kid is a stud. We have to improve our run defense before CovCath.

 

Tigers will be very fine this year. As Ryan pointed out, unless its CovCath, they won't play anyone as good as they did last night. I like the thinner, quicker version of the Tigers' linemen.

 

All in all, I was pleased.

No. He only played with the JV while I was there but he has a very nice throwing motion and throws a nice ball. He looks like a qb.

You better check your sources for rose colored glasses. It was 6 touchdowns for Highlands and 0 touchdowns for Beechwood.

 

Beechwood did have a couple of impressive drives but they did not score either time. In a real game the score would have ranged anywhere from 35 to 14 Highlands to 55 to 10 Highlands.

The last play of the game was Beechwoods lone touchdown and it was with the 2's in. It almost seemed as if they kept the game going until Beechwood finally scored.

My score of the scrimmage was a response to a 1 vs. 1 score result, not anything the 2nd teams did.

Yes the older Colosimo,Joseph,suffered the injury.He si a junior. I am not sure of the extent of the injury just yet.Keep him in your thoughts for a full recovery.He is a great young man.

Heard the young man got "trucked" by #63 Adam Dempsey on a counter. Please update as soon as any word on his condition is known.

Tony G throws a beautiful deep ball. The mid-range is/was his problem last night. He's a strong runner which will help.

 

I'll assume #62 was a Schlosser.

 

HHS has a typical HHS o-line. Some with size. Others that look like db's playing o-line. I swear the kid that started at RT could play corner or receiver.

Bad tackling by BW. I know HHS runs hard but still.

 

Daniels looked solid - not a great passer but will crush kids running the ball.

 

I thought the most pure-looking passer of the entire evening was the kid wearing #9 for BW. Who is he?

 

Collinsworth will put up big stats this year offensively. He was open for a TD on the first drive but TG didn't see him. He runs nice routes - shocker.

 

HHS isn't very big but they run very well -another shocker.

 

Maniello did OK. He didn't dominate by any means but of course he had to go both ways.

Are you kidding me??? RT was Tyler Grubbs, 6'5"/~280 lbs! You must mean RG which was Michael "Paco" Laber! 6'1"/ solid 220...former TE. He also played LB and made the big play stopping BW down around the goal line! I was much impressed by the improvement the OL made in one short week! Dempsey-Schlosser-Combs-Laber/Bardgett-Grubbs all did a fine job. Still room for improvement but much, much better. Got to tighten up the kicking game...much work yet to be done there. Who punts for BW...young man hit some absolute lasers last night! I thought Maniello would terrorize our young linemen...he seemed "off" last night. Was that Slusher or Teipel slapping the ball back at Guidugli on the screeens last night? (3 times). Lucky he did or they would have been HUGE gainers. BW QB looked good...runs well, made good decisions with the ball passing. Thought young Fennell for HHS was impressive running the ball. Adam Dempsey needs to fall on fumbles...but who can really blame him in a scrimmage for wanting to carry the rock!! Thought he did well on defense for Rosenhagen...especially since he saw ZERO time on that side of the ball last year! Hunter Schlosser did a great job last night as did the 2 Tylers (Grubs/Combs) Peter Bardget also looked solid...which will improve our defense with Paco! Nick Martin did an admirable job also out at OT. Road trip to the 'Ville next week!

Teipel punts and he is an excellent punter.

 

Slusher was the left DE knocking down the passes. Slusher should have a great year for the Tigers.

 

Maniello looked tired to me and Schlosser was getting underneath position on him.

Is Beechwood about where they should be this time of year? And are they as good as you expected? Is Beecwood a fast team or power team or a blend?

Guru, I know that you wanted to defer the commentary about HHS to the Highlands faithful, but I am VERY interested in hearing what you thought of their scrimmage performance. You've always been pretty much a straight-shooter when it comes to your insights about Highlands' performance.
