Guru, I know that you wanted to defer the commentary about HHS to the Highlands faithful, but I am VERY interested in hearing what you thought of their scrimmage performance. You've always been pretty much a straight-shooter when it comes to your insights about Highlands' performance.

Highlands is good, real good, but no where near as good as last year. However, by the end of the year that may change.

 

Tony G. looked good but not great. I think experience will help him and he did settle down as the scrimmage wore on.

 

Conner looked great (let me stress great) and a couple of other RBs looked good.

 

The OL looked good but with a lot of room for improvement.

 

It was hard to tell about the defense because they played a lot of 1A type players. What I did like was all 11 ran to the ball with more effort than normal and that is saying something.

 

Bottom line, Highlands will be right in the mix this year but I believe they will be a good amount better next year.

Is Beechwood about where they should be this time of year? And are they as good as you expected? Is Beecwood a fast team or power team or a blend?

 

I thought Beechwood was right on target. I think they will be very strong at QB this year with Daniels. He stood out to me as a stud athlete playing QB that can do it all. I would say they are a nice blend of speed and power and no fat kids to speak of this year. Beechwood will be an extremely difficult match up for any 1A team outside of LCA.

Are you kidding me??? RT was Tyler Grubbs, 6'5"/~280 lbs! You must mean RG which was Michael "Paco" Laber! 6'1"/ solid 220...former TE. He also played LB and made the big play stopping BW down around the goal line! I was much impressed by the improvement the OL made in one short week! Dempsey-Schlosser-Combs-Laber/Bardgett-Grubbs all did a fine job. Still room for improvement but much, much better. Got to tighten up the kicking game...much work yet to be done there. Who punts for BW...young man hit some absolute lasers last night! I thought Maniello would terrorize our young linemen...he seemed "off" last night. Was that Slusher or Teipel slapping the ball back at Guidugli on the screeens last night? (3 times). Lucky he did or they would have been HUGE gainers. BW QB looked good...runs well, made good decisions with the ball passing. Thought young Fennell for HHS was impressive running the ball. Adam Dempsey needs to fall on fumbles...but who can really blame him in a scrimmage for wanting to carry the rock!! Thought he did well on defense for Rosenhagen...especially since he saw ZERO time on that side of the ball last year! Hunter Schlosser did a great job last night as did the 2 Tylers (Grubs/Combs) Peter Bardget also looked solid...which will improve our defense with Paco! Nick Martin did an admirable job also out at OT. Road trip to the 'Ville next week!

 

I wonder if Clyde was thinking of Nick when he was on the O line? Nick's slight of build; huge of heart and effort.

He made some good passes, but for the most part, he seemed to overthrow receivers multiple times (too high) and he missed a couple of times along the sidelines. He did throw a couple of nice long balls though and I was impressed by his run. He has definately picked up a step from last season.

The defense played pretty well, no one really stood out from my point of view (which is a good thing in my opinion). There was a lot of flying to the ball and good, solid, tackling.

 

The quarterback and #44 for Beechwood were solid players. They both had some nice runs out in the open where they almost got away from the Highlands defense. There wasn't much passing other than one across the middle, which racked up a few yards. Overall, I was impressed with Beechwood. They will be a tough tough team to beat in 1A.

A bad concussion and possibly a broken wrist.

Decent scrimmage. Overall, I would give the Birds a B+. Really concerned about the unability of the center to get the QB's the football. If the ball doesnt go the Birds dont go.
