Card collecting has been screwed up by the "graded" cards. You might have perfect looking cards that you could've made money on back in the day, but now a grader would make it a 7, 8, or 9 and you wouldn't get jack for it. I used to love collecting cards, but now it just plain sucks. I have thousands and tens of thousands of cards, but I just keep them for my son one day because I can't make any real money on them.

 

:thumb: You got that right. I have a huge collection of cards and I wouldn't buy a pack of cards now for nothing. I just go out occasionally and pick up a rookie card of someone I might think will be the next Jordan, Montana, or Bonds (without the steroids).

I have approximately 15,000 sport cards that are a mix of NBA, MLB and NFL. They range from 1976 to 1994. My most prized cards are Ken Griffey's Upper Deck 1989 1st card issued, Cal Ripken Jr. Rookie, Rickey Henderson Rookie, Shaq Rookie, Nolan Ryan cards from 70's, etc etc.

 

I truly enjoyed the collecting part of it and looking them up. I sold a few on Ebay just for fun. I actually sold a 1974 Bucky Dent card with teh White Sox. Some lady in Indiana was a huge Bucky Dent fan and she bought it on Ebay for $5. I think it was worth 30 cents. LOL

 

I would agree with many posters that state the card market is saturated and they probably have more sentimental value than financial worth. I say hang onto them, keep them in great condition and pass them on. That is what I intend to do with mine.

That is smart. I have a buddy at work who is 34 yrs old, single, no bills hardly at all and he loves shopping for NFL rookie cards from the 60's and 70's. One day he looked over and said, I just bought Walter Payton's Rookie card for $180. I was like, wow you must have no bills. LOL

We have cards also - just holding on to them. We used to get the books to see how much they are worth.

I was looking through my old cards over the weekend. Found a Farve rookie card and a Kobe rookie. Also my collection of about 30 Griffey cards, I quit collecting around the turn of the millenium so they are all when he was with Seattle. I also have a McNabb rooke. I have a friend who is a huge Eagles fan, I'm sure I could sell it to him for ridiculously more than what its worth :lol:

Man this brings back a lot of memories. My dad used to bring me a pack or 2 everyday he came home from work. He would stop in the mornings to buy his Redman and about a 40 cent pack of cards for me. I used to think I was going to be rich. I have thousands. I traded around and thought I was going to make it big with the Canseco Rated Rookies, the Mattingly Donruss rookie, McGuire USA etc. Then there was the Greg Jeffries, Gary Thurman's and Jeff Treadway's. What a letdown! It was great times trading with the guys in the neighborhood. I got every Bench card I could! I still have some good one's like Seaver's rookie, a Maris MVP etc.

I have probably close to 75,000 baseball cards sitting in boxes and boxes in my basement. I know I have some good ones, like the Griffey Jr. Rookie Card, a Cal Ripken Jr. Rookie Card, a Michael Jordan Rookie Card, etc....I also have a Ken Griffey Jr. collection of a couple hundred cards that covers pretty much every card I could ever find of him. I wonder how much I could get for my entire collection....

Your Ripkin is agood card but if you have a real Jordan rookie in good shape, you should get several hundred dollars. I havent looked in years but it seems like it was booking at $750 in perfect condition. However, my memory is terrible. I would look it up for sure. If you decide to sell it, PM me. It would make a good Xmas present for my son!

:lol: No matter how much they're worth I'm about 95% sure I'd never sell any of them. It's something I look forward to passing down to my children some day.

I dont blame you. I would just like to get rid of my "junk" cards. I have 6 boxes of 3600 count filled with useless cards. I have started to throw them away on more than one occasion but Im always afraid there might be a little gem stashed in there. Several years back, I was killing time going through some of the junk cards and found 4 Farve rookies. He was in an Atlanta uniform and his first year was uneventful so he got stuck in the junk boxes. Im always afraid something like this could have happened again. My son once put a (basketball) Bob Lanier and Earl Monroe in the junk box. He was in his room when I asked about it. His reply was that they couldnt have been THAT good because he hed never heard of them. I told him to look over his shoulder because he had a poster of the 50 greatest players. He looked a little stunned!:thumb:

For this very reason, I go through my stash of cards 2-3 times a year. Just to see what I have. Sometimes you may find a gem, and sometimes you won't.

Here in the Hazard, KY area, we have the local flea market. I have found some prety nice cards for a very good price.

Did that with Couch. I have a bunch. I collected Marino cards and have about a 100, including his rookie. I like going to the flea markets and finding some relics. I bought a Hank Aaron card for $25 and a Stan Musial for around $12-15.
